MEL Science Bolsters Their VR/AR Learning Tool With $2.5 Million

MEL Science Bolsters Their VR/AR Learning Tool With $2.5 Million

Hands-on experiences can often provide better results when it comes to education, deeply embedding the knowledge and processes within the student. Some things will stick when reading and absorbing information tossed at a large group, but some subjects certainly require action. MEL Science embraces this ideal fully, providing a subscription service that includes 38 hands-on chemistry sets with a 3D microscope phone/tablet app to bolster the experience by showing what happens on a molecular level. It also is the first to include VR/AR implementation, further immersing their students in the practical project. Today, MEL Science announces that they’ve secured $2.5 million to take their education to the next level.

A look inside the MEL Science starter kit.

The MEL Science kit includes a smartphone macro lens, smartphone stand, syringes, a fuel stove, VR goggles, and other tools. It’s pretty neat to see a set of items that provides the essential things to experiment with chemistry while also tapping into the evolving digital culture that our children are growing up deeply embedded in. Kids and adults alike tend to have regular access to smartphones and tablets, so why not use these powerful devices to bolster the education process.

“First you touch the science physically with your hands, then you can look inside and see the processes at the molecular level,” says Vassili Philippov, who founded MEL Science in 2014, in a prepared statement. “This combination of practical training and virtual reality is the ideal form of learning. It helps you not just memorize but actually understand the essence of the event.”

Upload has previously reported on education initiatives involving virtual and augmented reality, including OpenSesame’s $9 million expansion of their e-Learning into VR and AR. Online language learning system Fluent Worlds is even planning the jump to VR. These types of programs are here to stay and potentially evolve as more investors recognize the huge potential in front of them.

‘Sprayscape’ Is A 360-Degree Camera Experiment For Android That Could Inspire Devs

‘Sprayscape’ Is A 360-Degree Camera Experiment For Android That Could Inspire Devs

Google’s Android operating system was unveiled in 2007 and has grown into the the mostly widely used OS of any kind, riding on the backs of its developer and consumer friendly open source nature. That open source nature, which makes the operating system’s source code easily available to developers, welcomed the imaginations of developers everywhere and Android Experiments is a site furthering that ideal. On the website, creators are encouraged to push the limits of the Android platform and share those experiments with Google. Today they’re sharing one of those experiments, the unique application Sprayscape that uses your camera in a 360-degree sphere as you tap to “spray” portions of your surroundings onto a canvas.

I tested the application out on my Nexus 4, a 4 year old device that handled the app with no issue. The downfall of having such an older phone limited the clarity of the images you add to the canvas, but the concept wasn’t to0 hard to put to work. Essentially, you turn in a 360-degree circle and tap the different spots you want to add an image. This first image is me shooting from the hip without learning how much of it works.

These “scapes” as the app calls them, can be shared directly to social networks and viewed as above or within the app in its 360-degree glory (add Google Cardboard for a more immersive experience). When you share on your Facebook wall others can swipe around or click and drag to see the full scape*. If you share as a direct message or on other applications like Instagram or Snapchat, you’re limited to the 2D image. After the first scape, I spent a bit more time experimenting with applying different degrees of pressure that influence image opacity and clarity and changing the size of the spray area for a slightly more satisfying result.

The application is very simple and stripped down in its current form (it’s only an experiment) but there’s one glaring missing feature: The ability to undo a spray. The application inspires you to be really creative with minute details, but you have to spot on the first go-round as the app stands. Sprayscape is an interesting look at creating quick and imperfect 360-degree snaps on the fly. The application is available in the Google Play store now and devs can take a look at the open source code to see how it works, if they wish.

*None of my private posts to my Facebook wall uploaded, but the preview of the post showed me exactly how the post would function.

Microsoft Opens Up HoloLens Pre-orders In 6 Countries

Microsoft Opens Up HoloLens Pre-orders In 6 Countries

One of the most well known mixed reality devices, Microsoft’s HoloLens, has had a pretty good year. Though HoloLens is not a consumer-oriented augmented reality device just yet (device is currently $3000), that’s simply because this groundbreaking tech is still in its early stages. Developers are charging forward with various entertainment and productivity applications (over 80 in the Microsoft store to date) and businesses are finding new ways to utilize the head mounted display as well. Development efforts are about to get a major adrenaline shot in the arm also, with Microsoft today expanding distribution globally to Australia, France, Germany, Ireland, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

International shipping has long been requested by developers, with the device previously only being available in the US and Canada. We’re looking forward to seeing what a whole new army of studios can do with the kit while we wait for other important features like HTC Vive integration.

We’ve previously reported on various examples of HoloLens implementation into company work flows, such as within NASA and elevator company ThyssenKrupp AG. NASA is using mixed reality to train astronauts and save money by testing parts virtually before production while ThyssenKrupp AG is improving safety conditions and saving their technicians time, projecting elevator diagnostics through the glasses and freeing up their hands while talking to technicians on Skype powered HoloLens chat. HoloLens isn’t all work and no play, though, with companies like Legendary Entertainment having serious mixed reality ambitions.

HoloLens is now available to pre-order exclusively from the Microsoft Store. The devices will start shipping in late November to those additional countries.

As for a retail edition of the device? That still seems a long way off, with no mention of it in a press release today. Meanwhile, we’re still looking to mysterious MR competitor Magic Leap to deliver some solid competition.

‘John Wick Chronicles’ Lets You Become The Legendary Hitman In VR

‘John Wick Chronicles’ Lets You Become The Legendary Hitman In VR

John Wick is a tale about the legendary assassin of the same name brought to life by Keanu Reeves and directors Chad Stahelski and David Leitch. The neo-noir action flick, that starts with the notorious hitman coming out of retirement after his dog is killed, birthed a franchise that is already developing its 3rd film with the 2nd having only received its first trailer this past weekend at New York Comic-Con. We reported on this new title from Starbreeze Studios in August and gamers will soon be able to step into Wick’s shoes in their VR game John Wick Chronicles. New York Comic-Con attendees were able to sample a 7-minute preview of the game in the HTC Vive, and the full experience is slated for February 2017.

It’s not Starbreeze’s first foray into video games based on film, as they’re responsible for the critically acclaimed game based on the Vin Deisel-led feature film Pitch Black. Chronicles also won’t exactly be the first time John Wick appears in the video game arena. John Wick was previously brought into the Pay Day 2 game world and, releasing on October 20th on Steam, Pay Day 2 will be getting the additional John Wick Weapon Pack for their bank robbery adventures.

John Wick Chronicles is available to pre-order on Steam for $19.99 and includes a free copy of Pay Day 2 along with the John Wick Weapon Pack DLC. For an additional $9.99 you can get the US exclusive digital deluxe version of the bundle that includes the John Wick film.

John Wick: Chapter 2 sees Keanu Reeves returning to the role with Chad Stahelski remaining in the director’s chair. The cast also adds Laurence Fishburne (The Matrix, Black-ish), hip-hop artist Common (Smokin’ Aces, Suicide Squad), and Angel Pai (Audition, Jessica Jones) to the mix as the hitman faces off against some of the world’s most lethal killers.

Mindmaze Collaborates With Dacuda For Room Scale VR Initiative

Mindmaze Collaborates With Dacuda For Room Scale VR Initiative

Mindmaze, a spin off from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, has taken a proficiency in VR and neuroscience that makes them one of the top startups in Switzerland and charged forward into consumer healthcare applications. The company is now taking an additional step forward by collaborating with Dacuda, a private computer vision company that developed a SLAM scanning technology. Together, the two companies have announced the MMI platform that aims to bridge a gap in capability between mobile VR platforms and more premium options like the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift.

Here’s how the initiative is described:

The technology pipeline behind MMI is based on some of the most advanced neurotechnology and real-time computer vision algorithms. It features MindMaze’s neural markers combined with Dacuda’s SLAM Scan 6DoF room-scale tracking technology. With its ability to measure emotions and body interactions, MMI will facilitate engaging social virtual reality interactions.

VR/AR with positional tracking on a mobile device is a definitive path into the hands and households of lots of consumers, and a number of companies are trying to solve this problem– including Oculus.

“Many are quite disappointed that Oculus still has not released anything for mobile room-scale VR – we can close that gap today, as shown publicly…with our positional tracking demo,” said Erik Fonseka, Dacuda founder & VP of mobile VR, in a prepared statement

Dr. Tej Tadi, founder at Mindmaze, recognizes the opportunity in front of them.

“To redefine high quality consumer VR and AR experiences beyond media and gaming into healthcare and wellness has been a long standing interest for MindMaze and with the MMI platform we intend to usher a new era of neural VR technologies accessible to millions of consumers,” he says.

The MMI platform will be deployed during 2016’s 4th quarter, with its sights focused on bringing the fully immersive VR experience to mobile devices. Of course, mobile positional tracking is an incredibly difficult problem to solve and we haven’t tested the latest technology from Dacuda and Mindmaze yet.

Adidas Launches New Soccer Boot Through London PlayStation VR Experience

Adidas Launches New Soccer Boot Through London PlayStation VR Experience

The PlayStation VR launch is creeping ever closer with October 13th right around the corner. While gamers and enthusiast await their personal devices, Polynoid, Woodblock, and Adidas have teamed up for a unique promotional event utilizing PS VR. Like the next groundbreaking cell phone release or a Black Friday sale, shoe releases can turn into major events and draw massive crowds. Adidas is bringing a new flavor to the shoe launch, immersing customers in a virtual space for their new Stellar Pack football boot.

The first time for such a release, Adidas stores across Europe will have PlayStation VR units on hand so customers can try the Stellar Pack experience. In 7.1 surround sound and full 360 degree video that lasts about a minute, users are thrown into outer space to see the new white and gold shoe assemble at a molecular level and collide with meteors.

It’s a curious setting for a virtual shoe launch for sure, but gives patrons a close up look at the football boot. Unless there’s a more involved experience in the future, we can’t really see this style of promo catching on in the shoe market, but the VR excitement alone will surely draw people in.

Polynoid is an established director and producer of short films and commercials and Woodblock is also an established is animated production. Adidas brings nearly 100 years of experience to the partnership, a mainstay in the show industry worldwide.

The Stellar Pack experience will be available until October 9th at Adidas stores in London, Barcelona, Madrid, Berlin, Paris, and Milan. The new shoe hit soccer fields on September 27th, worn by players such as Paul Pogba, Gareth Bale, Luis Suarez, and Mesut Özil. It will be available for consumer purchase today, on the 30th. The Stellar Pack Adidas X Boot will be priced at €275.
