Over 91.6 million PlayStation 4 Units Have Been Sold Worldwide

When it comes to videogame dominance, Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) quite clearly has the lead both in traditional consoles and virtual reality (VR). Today, as part of the company’s press conference for CES 2019 the most recent sales figures were released for PlayStation 4, with the console achieving a whopping 91.6 million sales worldwide by the end of 2018.

PlayStation 4 Sales Figures

From that number, SIE has revealed that PlayStation 4 through more than 5.6 million units globally during the 2018 holiday season. It is worth noting that as with all of Sony’s sales figures relating to retail sales these are in fact estimates, usually attained by the number of units the company has shipped to retailers. Even so, the figures still provide the best source when it comes to the overall PlayStation 4 ecosystem.

“Thanks to the continued support from our fans during the holiday season, we are pleased to announce that PS4 has reached 91.6 million units globally. We are also happy to announce that the monthly active users of PlayStation Network continues to show strong growth, and has surpassed 90 million as of end of November 2018,” said John Kodera, President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment. “I would like to express my deepest gratitude to our passionate community around the globe, and our partners, for helping us achieve these milestones. This year, we will bring more enhanced experiences to our fans along with a highly anticipated lineup of games that are only possible on PS4. As we look toward the next PS4 milestone, SIE will continue to evolve, and we will further expand the platform to deliver the best interactive entertainment experiences to the world.”

Unfortunately, there was no mention regarding how well PlayStation VR did over the holiday season. SIE ran a number of promotions and bundles for both North American and European customers, with the latter receiving the PlayStation VR Mega Pack bundle which included Astro Bot Rescue Mission, WipEout Omega Collection, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR, Doom VFRand PlayStation VR Worlds. While US and Canadian customers got the PlayStation VR Borderlands 2 VR and Beat Saber Bundle.

The most recent figures for PlayStation VR came in August 2018, when SIE announced that over three million headsets had been sold. SIE will likely release more PlayStation VR figures in due course when that happens VRFocus will let you know.
