Scotland In 3D A Victorian VR Tour Is Now On Kickstarter

A new Kickstarter has gone live which aims to produce a book that will give viewers a chance to explore the beautiful landscape and history of Scotland all within 3D. Created by Peter Blair, Scotland in 3D – A Victorian Virtual Reality (VR) Tour is a celebration of the 170th anniversary of Sir David Brewster’s stereoscope which was the first 3D camera. This laid the foundation for the technology we have today and the book aims to explore just how the 3D technology of the time was able to capture Scotland.

Scotland In 3D - A Victorian Virtual Reality Tour

Much like how head-mounted displays (HMDs) work today, Brewster’s camera worked by taking two pictures at the same time, one for each eye, which would then be viewed using a device that ensured only the left eye saw the left image and the right eye, the right image. This meant that even back in 1848 people were able to enjoy more immersive photography and experience the first step in 3D content.

The book, which is the second from Blair, features around 230 images that showcase antique views of Scotland from his collection. These will take viewers across all of Scotland and feature some very unique views that are sure to be a treat to anyone viewing them in 3D. To allow for people to enjoy the 3D side of the photos a fold-out stereoscope is included in the book offering a more immersive way to explore Victorian era Scotland. Each photo is accompanied by text that contains history, quotation, poem and anecdote loosely related to the photos to further the experience.

There are a limited number of this tier though so do make sure to act fact if you want to grab both of these 3D books.

At the time of writing the project is already over half way funded with £627 already raised of it’s £1,000 goal with 23 days still to go. The book offers a chance to experience a piece of history and is sure to be of interested to fans of VR technology or those looking to see Victorian era Scotland.
