Football is known to fans as ‘The beautiful game’ and is one of the most popular sports in the world, drawing in huge crowds to big games and raking in millions every year. Developer Cherry Pop Games is hoping to tap into the passion that people have for the sport with Football Nation VR.
Nina speaks to Gemma Jessop, Director of Business Development at Cherry Pop Games about Football Nation VR and what plans the studio has for the title.
Football Nation VR is a free upgrade to owners of VRFC: Virtual Reality Football Club and brings expanded gameplay, including tournament content which is inspired by the World Cup.
Players can don a VR headset to take the role of a professional football player taking part in cup matches at the iconic Wembley Stadium, running and kicking the ball using the hand-held motion controllers, soaking in the atmosphere of the famous sports venue.
“Football Nation VR was born from our first product, VRFC,” Jessop said, “Which was a five-a-side football which was really simple and fun. We learned lots from that, we got lots of feedback from the community and information on the controls and what people wanted improving on.”
As a result of that feedback, the team at Cherry Pop Games spent a lot of time altering and tweaking VRFC until it became quite different to the original iteration, causing the developers to decide to re-brand and relaunch the title under a new name with the expanded functionality.
All the countries who are involved in the real-life World Cup are represented in Football Nation VR, so players can play for their country and try and lead their team to victory for the chance to lift the coveted trophy.
Users can check their progress against a global leaderboard, and at the end of the World Cup, the player at the top of the leaderboard will get a special trophy and an in-game cosmetic reward of golden boots.
