Framestore, the creative studio behind Game of Thrones’ Ascend The Wall and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them VR has announced a strategic partnership with secretive mixed reality (MR) compnay Magic Leap.
In fact, Framestore has been working with Magic Leap for several years to create original content and new experiences that are expected to be released later this year on Magic Leap One: Creator Edition. The partnership will look to enable more brands and customers to build creative solutions, taking advantage of Magic Leap’s core technology.
“We are storytellers at Framestore, first and foremost; innovation courses in our veins,” said William Sargent, Framestore CEO in a statement. “The promise of Mixed Reality excites us enormously, and we are delighted that this collaboration with Magic Leap provides us with the chance to show the world the extraordinary potential of this new medium, as we experiment with new ways to share incredible narratives.”
Magic Leap finally released details about its first headset in December 2017, publishing several images as well as a fact sheet on what it could do. The Magic Leap One: Creators Edition comes with three components, the headset – or Lightwear – the circular processor and battery pack called Lightpack, and the haptic feedback, 6 degrees of freedom (6DoF) controller, which doesn’t have a snazzy name.
Rachna Bhasin, Magic Leap CBO, adds: “Framestore has an impressive track record in pioneering the early adoption of emerging technologies. As a Magic Leap early access partner they are ideally positioned to support companies ready to explore and innovate with the potential of spatial computing. Our partners are at the forefront of next generation content and experiences, and we’re excited to be working with Framestore on several projects.”
There are no details about exactly when the Magic Leap One system will launch or exactly how much it’ll cost – predictions estimate it retailing for around $1,500 to $2,000 USD. With Framestore on board there’s certainly the opportunity for some impressive looking experiences to be had. When Magic Leap release further details, VRFocus will keep you updated.
