PlayStation 4 5.00 Beta Update Rolled Out, Adds Sound and Social Improvements for PlayStation VR

Today, Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has begun rolling out its next system update for PlayStation 4. Currently in beta, the 5.00 version will see a range of improvements for the console as well as a couple for PlayStation VR.

The first for the virtual reality (VR) headset is a new setting called: ‘Display Message to Spectators and Spectators’ Comments’. This is mainly focused towards those users who like to stream their videogame sessions online, allowing spectator comments to be displayed in cinematic mode and VR mode. This helps VR broadcasters to keep up on comments and communicate with their viewers. In addition to this, a PlayStation 4 Pro update will support 1080p 60fps streaming on Twitch.

The second PlayStation VR addition is Virtual Surround Sound. When watching Blu-rays or DVDs in Cinematic Mode the headset now supports 5.1ch and 7.1ch virtual surround sound through headphones.

As this is a beta release don’t expect the update to hit your console today when you switch it on. It’ll only be available to those that signed up for access and were then chosen by SIE – check your emails if you did sign up.
