Technology In Education – The Effect of VR and AR

The rapid change and evolution of technology over the past few decades has caught many educators by surprise, with many educational centres struggling to keep up with the new skills that will be required from the next generation. An infographic examines the role of technology in modern teaching, looking closely at emerging technologies such as virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR).

Education City has released a guide for teachers and educators called Technology Will Shape Teaching in the Future. The comprehensive guide aims to show the factors that will shape the future of education and how teachers can prepare for the future.

The extensive infographic shows the benefits of various technologies. Looking first at VR, showing that 64% of consumers have shown an interest in applying VR to education. It also points out that VR offers the ability to experience educational locations and events, offering the example of a World War One trench.

The next example listed in the infographic mentioned ‘holograms’, which is this case largely refers to the type of mixed reality (MR) and AR holograms produced by technology such as Microsoft’s HoloLens. A statistic is given which says that a study showed that 86% of students who used 3D hologram-enhanced lessons improved over the study period compared to 52% who improved using only traditional 2D teaching. The infographic also offers an example of students using holograms to learn about the solar system, similar to a project to use the HoloLens in classrooms in Norway.

The infographic covers other technologies such as 3D printing, cloud computing and Gamification, listing benefits and use cases for each one. The full infographic can be found on the EducationCity website.
