There has been a recent rise in the use of augmented reality (AR) smartglasses for use in business environments such as manufacturing, quality control and warehousing. Google have begun to tap this market with the re-launch of Google Glass, as have Vuzix with the M300 smart glasses system. US company ThirdEye Gen is also hoping to enter this area with the launch of the X1 Smartglasses.
ThirdEye Gen developed the product using experience gained when working with the US Department of Defence on AR hardware and software. The X1 smartglasses system has a 1280x720p binocular display and the developers say its compact form factor allows the smartglasses to be comfortably worn while working.
The X1 smartglasses app uses a hands-free control system which allows users to control the software using the motion of the head, instead of needing a separate controller, or a smartphone or tablet. The software was developed in-house by ThirdEye, and has a Cloud-based component allows users to easily share with colleagues for collaboration or save for later reference.
The company have developed to software for the X1 Smartglasses to be modular, to allow for specific customisation depending upon the client. For example, for law enforcement applications real-time image recognition can be enabled; for Universites, livestreaming of lectures along with AR notes from the professor. ThirdEye are also working on custom educational content for integration with the X1 smartglasses, such as 3D AR renderings of the course curriculum, or interactive tours of the campus.
ThidEye are planning to have a booth at the AR section of CES 2018, which is due to take place on 9th-12th January, 2018.
