For anyone who has ever had the urge to build a secret evil lair underneath a volcano or on a hidden island and plot the conquest of humankind, They Live To Destroy is exactly the sort of virtual reality (VR) experience you have been searching for.
Most closely resembling strategy titles like the Civilisation series, or sim/management titles such as Sim City, only with the addition of more Mad Science. Players can don a Samsung Gear VR to build a secret island metropolis, then collect an army of kaiju-style monsters to lay siege to the world and conquer territory for your own nefarious purposes.
Sporting a 50s/60s B-movie aesthetic, complete with the font used for the title of the videogame, and the stop-motion, claymation style of the monsters as they stomp around and hyperbolic references to ‘Glorious 3D Atom-O-Vision’ and ‘VR Hypno-Rama’.
Gameplay combines city building, with several options to personalise the city to your satisfaction, along with monster collection and battling, only instead of tiny ‘Pocket Monsters’ they are taller than skyscrapers. There is an option to photograph monsters in action, to document the player’s rise to world domination.
They Live to Destroy was developed by High Voltage Software, who have previously worked on titles such as Saints Row: Gat out of Hell, Zone of the Enders 1 and 2 and Damaged Core. They Live to Destroy is available for free for Samsung Gear VR from the Oculus Store.
