VR Theatre Adaptation of The Glass Mask Year 3 Class D

3-Nen D-Gumi Glass no Kamen or The Glass Mask Year 3 Class D is a parody spin-off of a successful manga series aimed at young women titled The Glass Mask, which has also been adapted into several anime films and series. 3-Nen D-Gumi Glass no Kamen is a satirical show that began in 2016. Now it is set to feature as a virtual reality (VR) theatre experience.

Titled The Glass Mask Year 3 Class D ~ Fly Away, Our VR! (Victory Road) the theatre show will allow audiences to enter the world of The Glass Mask Year 3 Class D by using VR technology. The regular cast of characters from the series are set to return, with the addition of a new character named Hikaru Midorikawa.

Since the manga is primarily about the lives of aspiring young stage actors, staging a theatre event seems thematically appropriate. The original manga told the story of Maya Kitajima, a young professional stage actress and her rival, Ayumi Himekawa and the drama both on and off stage that surrounds them. The Glass Mask Year 3 Class D uses the same characters, but in a humorous way that satirises modern society.

A total of 29 performances are planned, with the shows taking place at the DMM VR Theatre in Yokohama. The DMM VR theatre is one of the first hologram projection theatres in the world, which uses multi-image layer projectors to create ‘Ghost-like’ holographic images on the stage. In the past, performances by vocaloid performer Hatsune Miku have taken place there, along with other state-of-the-art mixed reality art installations.

Performances of The Glass Mask Year 3 Class D ~ Fly Away, Our VR! (Victory Road) will take place from 22nd July until 3rd September, 2017. A video trailer is available to view below.
