One of the difficulties with modern PC virtual reality (VR) is making sure that all the components of the PC rig meet the required standards for ensuring the smooth running of an Oculus Rift or HTC Vive. ASUS has a potential solution in the form of a compact desktop PC that is designed for VR.
A PC rig without sufficient grunt can cause stutter and frame rate drops, which not only breaks immersion but can also trigger the dreaded VR motion sickness. The newly launched ASUS VivoPC X contains an Intel Core i5 processor, nVidia GeForce GTX 1060 GPU and DDR4 RAM which combine to give the kind of performance necessary to run VR experiences, not only videogames but also 4K video and 360-degree films.
The ASUS VivoPC X can support 4K video on displays up to 3840×2160 resolution and utilises nVideo G-Sync to reduce screen tearing and display stutter. The PC features two HDMI ports and one DisplayPort (DVI) that allows connections to HDTVs or monitors.
ASUS are also partnering with Oculus to provide a complete ‘out-of-the-box ‘ VR experience with a bundle containing an ASUS VivoPC X along with an Oculus Rift and Touch controllers along with four VR titles; The Unspoken, Superhot VR, Wilson’s Heart and VR Sports Challenge.
The VR bundle will be available from 25th April until 13th June for $1299 USD from Amazon and Newegg. The ASUS VivoPC X by itself retails for $799 from retailers such as Amazon, Newegg, Microcentre and the ASUS Store.
