Valve, developers of the technology behind the HTC Vive, has announced that the SteamVR Tracking solution is now open to all developers. Previously developers have been required to attend a training course costing $3,000 USD, but now direct access to the technology and course work has been made available free of charge in English and Chinese.
SteamVR Tracking was first made available to third parties in August of last year, and over 500 companies have signed up. Developed in-house at Valve, SteamVR Tracking is a hardware/software solution that lets your devices know in real-time where they are, within a room as can be seen with the HTC Vive.
In addition, the SteamVR base stations, known as ‘Lighthouses’, will be made available for purchase separately from the HTC Vive head-mounted display (HMD) later this year.
The HTC Vive is one of the leading virtual reality (VR) HMDs, with many developers targeting the roomscale tracking offered by the SteamVR Tracking solution. More information on this technology is available via the official website and VRFocus will keep you updated with all the latest details on Valve’s VR technology.
