FromSoftware Teases Possible Dark Souls VR Project Saying ‘We’re hoping’

At the Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2016 Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) revealed that 230 developers were working on projects for PlayStation VR. One of those happened to be Dark Souls studio FromSoftware Inc. Then in May the developer released a lineup video for its current and prospective future titles, with a teasing nod to the virtual reality (VR) title stating a possible 2017 release. Since then no other details have been forthcoming, but recently it has hinted a possible Dark Souls VR tie-in.

Last month the 2016 Golden Joysticks Awards were held and as part of the pre-show live-stream, host Julia Hardy interviewed Dark Souls 3 producer Atsuo Yoshimura. During the interview she asked him: “What’s your take on VR, are you for or against – do you like the idea of it. Are we going to see Dark Souls in VR?” To which Yoshimura replied: “Errr yes….we’re hoping, we’re hoping.”

This has so far been the closest confirmation of a possible Dark Souls style VR experience. With companies such as Bethesda announcing AAA adaptions of Fallout 4 and Doom it wouldn’t surprising if FromSoftware utilised the Dark Souls universe to create a grim, brooding VR videogame. If they are the question is, are they building it from the ground up for VR or are they adapting it from a standard console/PC project.

If the studio does decide to release any information this year on the project it’ll most likely come during PlayStation Experience next month, as an announcement like that would surely be saved for a big event.

As and when FromSoftware do revealed further details on the VR experience, VRFocus will report back with the latest details.
