2016’s Record Breaking VR Venture Funding Has Been Driven by Mega Deals

After years of record-breaking venture funding in the virtual reality industry, we wondered if 2016 would continue on its torrid pace. The numbers are starting to roll in, as reported in the new Fall edition of the 2016 Virtual Reality Industry Report, researched and published by Greenlight Insights and Road to VR.

Mega deals in VR venture funding have been the story of 2016. A diverse set of companies made up the largest venture deals of the year. This year, MindMaze ($100M) and NextVR ($80M) have raised two of the largest single venture rounds we’ve ever seen. Moreover, the top ten deals make up a whopping $396M, with several massive rounds at the top end:

2016-large-investment-deals-1Excluded from the analysis of more than 150 venture deals in the 2016 Virtual Reality Industry Report are large deals in adjacent technology industries, such as Magic Leap’s $793.5M Series C (February 2016), which Greenlight Insights counts as an augmented reality deal, and Unity’s $181M Series C (July 2016), which is primarily a game engine. But even without counting these outliers, 2016 will end as a record-breaking year for VR investments.

“This year will shatter funding records. The number of deals and actual dollar value is up significantly year-over-year,” says Greenlight Insights’ Senior Vice President, Steve Marshall. “As for next year, we expect to see more breakout deals as the first wave of innovation matures.”

However, despite the vigorous funding environment throughout much of this year, Greenlight Insights still considers the virtual reality industry to be very much in its first wave of innovation, with much of the action still at the early stages and many potential success stories still waiting to be written.

The complete analysis of 2016’s VR venture funding, and everything else you need to know about VR this year, is available in the newly updated 92-page 2016 Virtual Reality Industry Report, which includes new market revenue and hardware shipment forecasts; for a limited time you can use the special code ROADTOVR to save $500.

‘Rez Infinite’ and ‘Pokemon Go’ Take Home VR/AR’s First Ever Game Awards

‘Rez Infinite’ and ‘Pokemon Go’ Take Home VR/AR’s First Ever Game Awards

It was an exciting night for video games as Geoff Keighley took over the internet with his annual Game Awards. The industry’s best and brightest came out in droves, both in person and online, to watch, compete against and congratulate one another for one of gaming’s highest honors. It was an exciting night for every corner of gaming…except virtual reality.

This was the first year that The Game Awards featured a “Best VR Game” category. This, in and of itself, is a satisfying coup for our fledgling industry, but the nominees raised some eyebrows. All of the suggested award winners are PlayStation VR titles – with zero Rift or Vive exclusives on the list. Take a look at the nominees for yourself:

None of these are bad games. Most of them are great actually, and one are two are even amazing. However, they are all tied specifically to the PlayStation VR, the most “mainstream” headset out there and do nothing to acknowledge the amazing and innovative experiences available on the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive — names just as respected as “Sony” in the land of VR, if not more so.

The night’s winner, Rez Infinite, is a truly beautiful experience that has made several VR luminaries, including the grandfather of the entire industry, Palmer Luckey, break down in tears. It is certainly worthy of an award, it would just be more meaningful if its competition was a better reflection of the entire VR landscape in 2016.

Even the way the “Best VR Game” was announced was something of a let down. Keighley simply stated the winner with no preamble, acceptance, or on-screen information. There was zero showmanship. No one even took the stage to accept the award because it happened so quickly and it even occurred before the show officially started (during what was called the “pre-show”).

Augmented Reality also got it’s share of praise as the global sensation Pokemon GO unsurprisingly snatched the “Best Mobile Game” trophy for Niantic, as well as “Best Family Game”.

All in all, tonight was a reflection of VR’s place in mainstream games journalism as a whole. We’re here, they see us, but they aren’t quite ready to fully pay attention just yet.

There’s always next year.

10 Steam VR Vive Games We Confirmed Work With Oculus Rift And Touch

10 Steam VR Vive Games We Confirmed Work With Oculus Rift And Touch

One of the biggest questions on everyone’s mind regarding the Oculus Rift and Oculus Touch is whether or not it will work with many of the biggest and best Steam VR titles that were previously marketed as Vive-only. While the concept of an “exclusive” is fluid and up for interpretation in the VR industry since the same PCs power both headsets, the storefronts and interface options are different. Just because Steam will recognize your Rift, Touch controllers, and sensors, doesn’t mean that all of the motion controller games will work flawlessly.

That said, in addition to the 53 games Oculus Home will have for new Touch owners on Dec. 6th, many of the games avaialble on Steam do work on Touch, even if Oculus Rift support isn’t officially listed under Steam’s ‘VR Support’ category on the game’s Steam page.

We’ve seen footage of developers and other people playing games like Hover Junkers using the Oculus Touch, and the controllers have been officially supported in Steam since this summer, far ahead of the Oculus Touch launch next week on Dec. 6th. What you’ll find below is a list of some of the top Steam VR games we’ve confirmed with our own eyes and hands work with Rift and Touch — all of which were previously only supported by the HTC Vive, according to their Steam pages.

Due to embargo, we can’t talk yet about the specifics of using the controller, what worked well and what felt off, or tips outside of the publicly available Touch room-scale setup guide that we published yesterday. Also note that just because a game is not on this list does not mean that it doesn’t work — it may just mean we didn’t get around to confirming for ourselves that it worked.

You can also check this list of the best HTC Vive games for more suggestions.
