The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners – Chapter 2: Retribution is now available on PlayStation VR2 and PC VR.
Saints & Sinners – Chapter 2 launched last December for Quest 2, featuring some pretty glaring bugs and issues that plagued the initial release. However, two weeks later developers Skydance Interactive patched the game to address those major bugs. In our review, which was published post-patch, we noted that the most severe and game-breaking bugs had seemingly been resolved, but some smaller pop-in issues still remained.
Three months later, the game is available on PC VR and PSVR 2. Players now also have the ability to transfer Chapter 1 save data from Meta, PC and PlayStation platforms to a copy of Chapter 2 on Meta, PC and PlayStation (Pico support for this feature is “arriving later this year”). Skydance also says that a day one patch for this version of the game includes improved environmental lighting, improved NPC animations and rebalanced armored enemies.
Skydance indicated that Retribution features platform-specific visual upgrades on PSVR 2. Exact details of those upgrades weren’t provided, but you can check out some footage in the PSVR 2 and PC VR launch trailer embedded above. On Quest 2, the game looks acceptable with lots of room for improvement – here’s hoping the power of the PS5 lets Skydance push the visual fidelity up on PSVR 2 then.
The PS5 version of Saints & Sinners – Chapter 1 is also now available on PSVR 2, bringing the acclaimed original game to Sony’s latest headset. Those who own the ‘Tourist Edition’ of the original on PS4 will receive the PS5 version for free, while those with the standard edition on PS4 can upgrade for $10. For those who are completely new to the franchise, Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 are also available in a bundle for PSVR 2.
We’re looking forward to checking out Chapter 2 on PSVR 2 this week – fingers crossed this release runs smoother than the Quest version did last December.
This week’s State of Play PlayStation Showcase was a big one for PSVR 2.
Sony promised a sneak peek of games for its upcoming headset and it didn’t disappoint. In case you’re catching up, here’s every PSVR 2 game announced and shown during the event.
Resident Evil 4 Remake (PSVR 2 Supported Content)
Sony kicked off the show with a bang. We got our first look at the anticipated remake of Capcom’s survival horror epic, Resident Evil 4. The game will be a reimagining of the 2005 original with updated controls and new story elements. But the end of the trailer also confirmed that the game with have “PSVR 2 Supported Content”.
Note that this doesn’t confirm the full game will be playable inside VR; it sounds like we might get an additional mode or something similar. Of course, you can already play the original Resident Evil 4 in VR on Quest 2, which is exclusive to that platform. Might that exclusivity deal have something to do with the PSVR 2 content on offer here?
Resident Evil 8
Still, even if we don’t get the full Resident Evil 4 Remake experience in PSVR 2, we will be getting all of last year’s horror hit, Resident Evil 8, in the headset. A trailer showed the game being played with PSVR 2, including full motion controls with new elements like manual reloading and dual wielding weapons.
This one had long been rumored for PSVR 2 support and it made sense given that Resident Evil 7 was one of the first AAA games to implement the original PSVR headset. We can’t wait to revist the entire game inside VR once PSVR 2 is out. Of course, if you can’t wait that long, there’s already an incredible VR mod on PC.
The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners Chapter 2 – Retribution
Another easy win for PSVR 2, the follow-up to Saints & Sinners was confirmed to be coming to the headset in 2023. We got a new trailer showing us more of the game than we’ve ever seen before, and confirmation that it’ll hit the original PSVR in 2022 and PSVR 2 next year.
That latter point is pertinent, as it seems to be the biggest hint yet that Sony’s next headset won’t arrive until 2023. Either way, we’re excited we’ll get to play the next game in one of our favorite VR series on the new device.
No Man’s Sky
Once again, we’d predicted we’d get a look at Hello Games’ sci-fi epic running on PSVR 2 at the show and we weren’t disappointed. No Man’s Sky already includes great VR support on PS4 and PC, so it stands to reason that the PSVR 2 support will be great. Expect this support to come via a free update, much as the original VR integration did a few years ago.
Horizon Call of the Mountain
The PSVR 2 section of the show closed out with another look at the PSVR 2-exclusive. This time around we seemed to get definitive proof that this will be a full game and not just a short, on-rails experience. We saw the player wielding a bow and arrow to take on robotic dinosaurs, much as you do in the core series. More than that, though, this seemed to be a really compelling graphical showcase for PSVR 2, and we’re likely to see the headset’s other new features implemented, too.
And that’s all the announcements for PSVR 2 at this week’s State of Play. We still didn’t get any release information for the headset itself, though it’s looking increasingly likely we’ll get it in 2023.
What reveals got you excited? Did Sony convince you to pick the headset up? Let us know in the comments below!
The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners – Chapter 2: Retribution
Can you believe it, it’s been a whole two years since Skydance Interactive released The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners, providing one of the best zombie survival experiences in virtual reality (VR). Today, to mark the occasion the studio has announced a follow-up, continuing the journey in Chapter 2: Retribution.
The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners –Chapter 2: Retribution will be its own standalone title but will continue the storyline from the original, Skydance Interactive confirms. You’ll once again step into the shoes of The Tourist and try to survive in the zombie infested streets of New Orleans.
Currently, the development team has revealed that this new chapter will feature new characters and new threats to deal with. But it’ll still retain elements that made the original what it was, like making those difficult narrative decisions.
“The past two years have been absolutely incredible for The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners, and we’re grateful for the continued support from the player community who have helped make the game the success it is today,” said Chris Busse, acting head of Skydance Interactive in a statement. “We’re excited to announce Chapter 2, and we can’t wait to let players explore the new adventures that await them in the French Quarter and beyond.”
If you’ve not tried the zombie game yet, gmw3 said in its review of The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners: “From the very beginning, The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners offers a satisfying zombie experience that’s hard to match. Titles like Arizona Sunshine easily fill that need for straight-up arcade action, for when you want a living dead apocalypse with a bit more depth then The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners is your new go-to videogame.”
That’s not all Skydance Interactive had to announce today. The studio also revealed The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners has surpassed $60 million USD in revenue across PCVR, PlayStation VR and Meta Quest. The studio hasn’t indicated when the new chapter might arrive so for continued updates on Chapter 2: Retribution, keep reading gmw3.
Three of PSVR’s very best games are being given away at no extra charge for PlayStation Plus members next month.
As part of the headset’s fifth-anniversary celebrations, Sony is giving away The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners, The Persistence and Until You Fall from November 2nd. As long as you’re signed up to Plus, which you need to play online and get access to other PlayStation giveaways too, you’ll be able to download them with no trouble.
Each of these three titles features in our current list of the 25 best PSVR games. In fact, Saints & Sinners is currently in our #2 spot (and tops our list of the best games on Oculus Quest, too). We love it for its visceral, physical zombie action that takes full advantage of the platform, and developer Skydance Interactive recently launched a huge free update for the game, too.
Until You Fall, meanwhile, is a fantastic roguelite from Schell Games with thrilling arcade melee combat. Finally, The Persistence is a great gamepad-based, procedurally generated horror title. It’s developed by Firesprite Games, the UK-based studio that Sony itself recently acquired to make exclusive PlayStation titles in the future. We already know the studio is working on a new VR game, too.
These free PS Plus games also make for a good reason to plug PSVR back in towards the end of its lifecycle. 2022 is approaching and we’re expecting Sony to soon share more on its PS5 VR headset. You can check out everything we know about that device right here.
Virtual reality (VR) is in a constant battle to show how it can be a viable revenue stream for developers and not just a very niche market. It’s why companies such as Facebook – or mainly Facebook – have released figures showcasing the revenue generation of popular titles. The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners was one of the biggest VR videogames of 2020 and today, developer Skydance Interactive has announced revenue generated from sales has exceeded $50 million USD across all platforms.
The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners launched back in February 2020 for PC VR headsets before coming to PlayStation VR a few months later, Surprisingly, Skydance Interactive managed to bring the zombie experience to Oculus Quest in late 2020. And since that launch, the studio has rolled out a selection of updates including Meatgrinderwhich added a horde mode called The Trial. Most recently, the Aftershocks Update dropped a big expansion for the videogame, extending the campaign by several hours.
In The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners, the main campaign drops you in a partially flooded New Orleans after the zombie apocalypse has destroyed the city. Drifting through town you hunt for dwindling supplies whilst getting caught up in the politics and battles of the townsfolk, not forgetting about the undead menace lurking around every corner. You’re well-armed, of course, with swords and knives for silent kills whilst guns provide a louder, ranged approach.
If you’ve not tried the zombie game yet, VRFocus said in its review of The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners: “From the very beginning, The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners offers a satisfying zombie experience that’s hard to match. Titles like Arizona Sunshine easily fill that need for straight-up arcade action, for when you want a living dead apocalypse with a bit more depth then The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners is your new go-to videogame.”
For new players The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners will be discounted for PlayStation VR until 3rd November, over on Steam a discount will run until 1st November. VRFocus will continue its coverage of the survival horror, reporting back with further updates.
Note: Obviously there are spoilers for The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners – Aftershocks included in this article. If you want to go in fresh, best avoid!
What Are The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners – Aftershocks Keys?
As you play through Aftershocks, which is accessed after the main campaign is over, you should find three keys. Each is a different shape – there’s a square, triangle and circle. They are missable in the campaign, but I found them near cache drops and off of dead enemies too. Once you’ve completed all of Aftershocks’ main objectives, you’ll have just one task: find out what the keys are for.
How Do You Start The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners – Aftershocks Keys Quest?
Want to complete this quest on your own? Then start here; the game gives you no real direction on how to start off so we’ll just give you the main hit to get the ball rolling. Shine your new UV light inside the bus you sleep in back in the hub area. And off you go!
How Use The Keys In The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners – Aftershocks?
Okay, time for the meaty explanation. Go inside your bus and shine the UV light on the map. You’ll see the Bastion level has been circled by someone. Seems like a clue, no?
Travel to Bastion and switch on your flashlight once again. With the UV on, you’ll see a message about supplies right in front of you. Walk forwards and you’ll eventually see an arrow on the wall to your left. It leads you out onto the street where you’ll want to head right.
Keep going down the road, you should see more arrows on the floor as you walk. Eventually, you’ll come to a crossroads.
Over on the right side, across the road is a house with a crashed car in the corner. You’ll have visited it earlier in Aftershocks’ campaign, but this is where the three keys need to be used. Again, the UV lights will point you in the right direction but just in case:
The triangle key goes in a cupboard in the kitchen area.
The circle key is behind the toilet in the bathroom.
The square key goes between the bed and desk in the bedroom.
Use all three and you’ll hear a noise. Travel back into the hallway and look for some washing machines. One appears to have shifted. Your prize is just beyond there.
What Do The Keys In The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners – Aftershocks Unlock?
Okay, now you want the real spoilers? Well, the keys unlock what appears to be a safe room. Unlike the other missions in Aftershocks, the room isn’t loaded with valuable resources to take back to camp (though there is some food). Instead, the room seems to be dropping hints about a new character, one that stayed in the safe room, sports an armored Tower costume and has been doing some pretty meticulous planning. There’s also mention of the historic French Quarter not seen in the game’s existing levels and one letter found on their desk simply reads: “Murderer Tourist”. Sounds like someone doesn’t think very highly of you.
Could Skydance be teasing more DLC for Saints & Sinners? Or is it perhaps giving us the first hints about a full on sequel to the smash hit VR game? Only time will tell.
So there’s how to use the keys in The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners – Aftershocks. Did we miss anything? Do you have any extra tips? Let us know in the comments below!
As great as The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners’ Aftershocks update, it left us eager to hear what’s next for Skydance Interactive’s hit VR game.
As it turns out, the update drops a few hints itself.
Note: There are spoilers for The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners – Aftershocks in this article.
Once you’ve completed all of Aftershocks’ main campaign, you’ll be left with just one objective – to find a use for three mysterious keys you collected along the way. Actually figuring out what to do with them is tough (but we have a handy guide to help right here).
You end up using them inside one house in the game’s Bastion map. Doing so unlocks a hidden safe room underground. Inside appears to be hints for what’s next for Saints & Sinners.
The safe house has been used by a mysterious new character. We don’t get to meet them, but there is a large mannequin in the room sporting what looks like armor pried off one of the members of The Tower faction. Crazed, cult-like writing is sprawled over some walls talking of wrath and everyone being guilty. In one area is a sprawling map of New Orleans and the encounters this character seems to have had. They also keep a list of others that have either ‘Betrayed’ or ‘Lied’ to them.
Oh, and flip the list over and there’s a category on it for ‘Murderer’. And, yup, The Tourist is written on it. Eek.
A postcard, meanwhile, displays the message: ‘Greetings From The French Quarter’, referencing one of New Orleans’ most historic areas. On the back it reads: ‘See you soon!’
It certainly seems like Skydance is dropping hints for what’s next, then. Could the studio be hinting at a new DLC expansion that introduces this character and the French Quarter area? Or could we perhaps see a full sequel that uses the district as its setting?
Either way, we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for more.
Aftershocks ticks the box of delivering more of a VR game we’ve been away from for far too long. Read on for our The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners – Aftershocks review.
It speaks to just how good The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners is that, even after spending 20+ hours with it on multiple platforms and coming back for last year’s Meatgrinder update, I still want a lot more of it. In fact large parts of the game still feel new to me, like I didn’t get to spend enough time with them in the existing campaign. And that’s always been a frustration with Skydance’s zombie game; even as one of VR’s longer titles, it ends before you’re really done with it. And, while the wave-based survival addition was fun, we’re all really looking for more excuses to dive back into its survival sandbox.
Aftershocks finally delivers those excuses, and plenty of them.
The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners – Aftershocks Review
Aftershocks is essentially the endgame content Saints & Sinners has been missing for the past year. It’s a set of missions that are anchored around a simple premise – boxes of valuable resources have appeared, spread across the game’s existing maps, and it’s up to you to find them. Each mission tells you the map where you’ll find your next cache, but it’s up to you to travel there, seek it out and deal with any threats that might be in your way.
Think of Aftershocks as Saints & Sinners: Remixed, then. Skydance reexamines its current maps and rejigs them with twists both old and new. Existing paths are blocked, enemies occupy new areas and there are some small cosmetic changes too. One cache might be embedded deep within an enemy stronghold, for example, or you may need to navigate a series of tripwires to discover one.
The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners – Aftershocks Review – The Facts
What is it?: An update to the existing zombie survival game that adds new endgame content. Platforms: Quest, PC VR, PSVR Release Date: September 23rd Price: Free update
Nothing here dramatically changes up the gameplay so much as it does expand upon it. Saints & Sinners was a game about slowly and steadily building an arsenal but, when you finally got the best weapons and the resources to make ammo for them, the ending credits weren’t far off. Now there’s the chance for plenty more high-level play, especially once you open up a cache and are treated to more crafting resources than you’ll find anywhere else in the campaign.
And, seriously, what a reminder of just how brilliant these systems are. Saints & Sinners really is one of the best sandboxes you’ll find in VR; at one moment it slips my mind that a group of enemies I’ve just shot through will reanimate as the undead. They do so just as I’m flanked by another group, providing the unexpected distraction I need to slip away and refuel. Often when you open a cache you’ll find new enemies populate the scene, making extraction just as unpredictable as infiltration was.
The melee, meanwhile, is still tremendous, and I don’t think anyone’s come even close to topping it in the 18 or so months since launch. It is a shame, though, not to see any truly new weapons or tools added to this update. Nothing you’ll find in the supply crates will do much more than replenish your supplies back home. You’ll also encounter the same old issues like the troublesome human AI, which often fails to make sense of a given situation. There is an upgrade to your flashlight that adds an interesting little catch to some of the later levels but, again, this is really Skydance doing the best with the tools it already has more than it is crafting something truly new.
The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners – Aftershocks Review: Final Impressions
And that’s okay. Aftershocks is, quite simply, more of the Saints & Sinners you love. It extends the game’s original runtime by a few more welcome hours and gives you more excuses to visit Skydance’s stunning zombie sandboxes kitted out as an undead-chopping, Reclaimed-shooting juggernaut. It’s good to be back, even if we’re more than ready for a full sequel.
