VR Card-Battler ‘Skyworld: Kingdom Brawl’ Gameplay Revealed in New Video

Chomping at the bit for the next Skyworld game? Vertigo Games and Vive Studios recently showed off some new footage of the upcoming VR card-battler Skyworld: Kingdom Brawl in action, and it seems they’re hoping to take it to new heights in the burgeoning VR esports scene.

Skyworld: Kingdom Brawl is a game where you collect and upgrade dozens of cards to build a battle deck. You cast spells, raise armies, spend mana, etc. It’s an online multiplayer, and is basically an outgrowth from the original Skyworld’s ‘General Battle’ real-time strategy mini-game.

It seems the cross-platform title is being positioned as a potential esport too, as the studio contracted former Machinima producer & esports announcer Shayan Tamayo to commentate on a mock championship battle that shows off a head-to-head, best out of three fight.

To that tune, Vertigo Games has partnered with the Virtual Athletics League to launch a Skyworld: Kingdom Brawl arcade tournament in late April. The studio is putting up a “slew of prizes,” including an HTC Vive Pro, for the winner.

From April 2nd to April 8th, participating arcades will be able to operate the PvP game at no cost in preparation for the inaugural tournament, which ought to reel in interest.

The game is slated to arrive on HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, Windows VR headsets, and Vive Focus on April 2nd, which includes cross-platform multiplayer. A version for Vive Focus Plus is said to launch at some point later this year.

The game will be priced at $10 with a 15% discount available during launch week.

Vertigo Games’ RTS Skyworld now Available for PlayStation VR

PlayStation VR owners looking for a decent real-time strategy (RTS) title will be happy to know that Vertigo Games’  Skyworld has now arrived for the popular headset.

Skyworld PS VR

Originally a PC release for Oculus Rift and HTC Vive back in 2017, Skyworld is, in fact, a mixture of RTS and turn-based strategy (TBS) components. Offering both single-player and multiplayer options, matches take place on a large circular table which can be spun round to see all areas of the map. In this layout, the gameplay is TBS based, with players having to manage the expansion of territory, gain sufficient resources, and then build their army ready for battle.

When an engagement with the enemy takes place then the entire table spins over to start the real-time battles, where players can test out their troops, armaments and magic abilities. All of these have unique properties for different strategies, plus they can be upgraded for tactical advantages.

The PlayStation VR version also introduces new features. There’s now a persistent levelling system where players can earn XP in single and multiplayer matches and daily challenges for further XP. Special avatars are available, in addition to leaderboards to track player performance.

“With the launch of Skyworld on PSVR, we’re excited to bring the hybrid strategy game to a new platform with millions of players,” said Richard Stitselaar, Managing Director at Vertigo Games in a statement. “We’ve had so much fun creating a world where players can be ruling both high above their kingdom as well as down low on the battlefield with their army.”

Skyworld PS VR

VRFocus reviewed the PC version of Skyworld giving it a solid four-stars, finding that the title was highly challenging and offered an excellent mixture of RTS and TGS gameplay. It also happened to be one of our favourite (RTS) experiences of 2017, so hopefully, it should do well on PlayStation VR with the new additions.

Developed by Wolfdog Interactive, a Dutch videogame development studio specializing in VR, Skyworld is now available for purchase via the PlayStation Store for $29.99 USD/€29.99 EUR. For further updates from Vertigo Games on all its VR titles, keep reading VRFocus.

PlayStation VR to see Turn-Based Strategy Title Skyworld Arrive in March

Last November, Wolfdog Interactive and Vertigo Games announced that they would be bringing their turn-based strategy title Skyworld to PlayStation VR early this year. Today, the studios have confirmed a release date, and it’s not far away, arriving by the end of the month.

Skyworld PS VR

It’s not going to be the same Skyworld which released back in 2017 for Oculus Rift and HTC Vive either, PlayStation VR players are going to be treated to additional features. There’s now a persistent levelling system where players can earn XP in single and multiplayer matches, daily challenges for further XP, unlockable avatars, and online leaderboards.

Skyworld on PlayStation VR still contains the originals hybrid gameplay system, mixing both turn-based management, deck building, and frantic real-time battles. On the turn-based management side, players will have to gauge how quickly to expand territory, gain the correct resources, build their armies, before heading into battle.

Armies can be built from a total of 16 units, with everything from archers and snipers to siege tanks, flying fortresses and even dragons. Units can not only be built but also upgraded to improve their combat efficiency in battle. It’s always best to hone a strategy in single-player, learning which troops suit certain situations or are best against particular opponents before heading online. PLus players can also unlock special magical abilities to aid their armies mid-fight.

Skyworld PS VR

When VRFocus reviewed the PC version of Skyworld we gave is a solid four-stars, finding that the game was highly challenging and didn’t waver in the slightest. It also happened to be one of our favourite (RTS) experiences of 2017, so it should do well on PlayStation VR.

Vertigo Games will be releasing Skyworld on PlayStation VR on Tuesday, 26th March 2019.

Additionally, the studio and publisher also revealed last week a new title in the franchise, Skyworld: Kingdom Brawla multiplayer card-battler which will be debuted at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2019 next week. The launch will take place on 2nd April 2019, supporting HTC Vive, HTC Vive Pro, HTC Vive Focus, Oculus Rift and Windows Mixed Reality headsets. Vertigo’s Skyworld Finally Hits PSVR Later This Month

Vertigo’s Skyworld Finally Hits PSVR Later This Month

Good news; the long-awaited PSVR port of Vertigo Games’ Skyworld is very nearly here.

The tabletop strategy game touches down on PS4 in just under two weeks’ time on March 26th. The port contains the entire original game in which two players fight for control of a model world. It’s a turn-based experience in which you build a town and strengthen your army. Eventually, you’ll go head-to-head in combat, deploying your forces in the field. Check out the nuts and bolts in the trailer below.

But the PSVR version packs new features too. There’s a persistent leveling system to take XP across single and multiplayer modes, for example. There are also leaderboards to compete in and new avatars to unlock.

We weren’t incredibly swept away with Skyworld when we reviewed it on PC. It has enjoyable moments and great ideas, but some bigger problems too. Still, we love the art style and there’s potential to build upon what’s here. We’ve played the PS4 port and, for what it’s worth, it holds up. Once the PSVR version is out we’d love to see a Quest version, though that’s not been announced yet.

That’s not all Vertigo is working on for Skyworld, though. Last week Vertigo announced Skyworld: Kingdom Brawl, a PvP card battle game. That’s due to come to HTC Vive, Vive Focus, Rift, and Windows VR headsets on April 2nd.

Elsewhere, Vertigo is now bringing Innerspace VR’s Corsair’s Curse to its arcade locations around the world. It’s a puzzle game based on Innerspace’s first Vertigo-published title, A Fisherman’s Tale.

Skyworld: Kingdom Brawl Is A Cross-Platform PvP Card Battle VR Game

Skyworld: Kingdom Brawl Is A Cross-Platform PvP Card Battle VR Game

Today, Vertigo Games announced Skyworld: Kingdom Brawl, a brand-new VR game in the same universe as their RTS/MOBA hybrid, Skyworld, that’s due out on April 2nd for HTC Vive, Vive Focus, Rift, and Windows VR headsets. Launching on both PC VR and a standalone platform at the same time is a relatively new thing and hopefully we see this make its way to Quest and PSVR later this year as well.

Truth be told we really weren’t big fans of Skyworld when it came out. As a strategy game it was too shallow and as a MOBA it just didn’t do enough. It felt like it was going through a bit of an identity crisis and never really figured itself out before launch. But Skyworld: Kingdom Brawl looks downright delightful.

For clarity, this is actually developed by Vertigo Games, just like Arizona Sunshine and Skyworld. Vertigo is also now a publisher as well and recently published A Fisherman’s Tale [9/10] and just announced Corsair’s Curse from that same developer. Similar to how Bethesda develops games (The Elder Scrolls, Fallout) but also publishes them (DOOM, Dishonored, Wolfenstein, etc.)

We don’t know very much about the game mechanics yet since that teaser is painfully brief, but the press release has a few details:

“Unlock, collect and upgrade dozens of cards to build a powerful deck, and watch your cards come to life as you cast spells and summon forces to wipe your enemy off the map. Join a clan, take on opponents from around the globe in regular online tournaments, and claim your place on the global leaderboards.”

Skyworld: Kingdom Brawl will be demoing at GDC in the VR Play Area, so we will check it out in-person later this month and report back with impressions. Let us know what you think of the game so far down in the comments below!

Vive Studios & Vertigo Games Announce VR Card Battle Game ‘Skyworld: Kingdom Brawl’

Vertigo Games, the studio behind Arizona Sunshine (2016) and Skyworld (2017), have teamed up with Vive Studios to create a new VR card-battler dubbed Skyworld: Kingdom Brawl.

The studios say the game will be available on HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, Windows VR headsets, Vive Focus—with full cross-platform support—on April 2nd, 2019. Support for HTC’s newly announced 6DOF standalone headset Vive Focus Plus is said to come later this year.

Skyworld: Kingdom Brawl, like many card-based battle games, lets you collect, unlock, and upgrade cards to build a deck, although the creators say you’ll also be able to “watch your cards come to life as you cast spells and summon forces to wipe your enemy off the map.” In Skyworld: Kingdom Brawl you’ll also be able to join a clan, play in regular online tournaments, and post your high score on a worldwide leaderboard.

Check out the list of features mentioned on the game’s official website:

  • Play dozens of cards to deploy troops and cast spells
  • Challenge friends worldwide in cross-platform multiplayer
  • Choose from over 20 unique battle arenas
  • Join a clan, battle for glory and claim your rewards!

  • Make name for yourself in regular tournaments

Vertigo Games Turns Skyworld Into Cross-Platform Multiplayer Card Game

Vertigo Games released its mix of real-time and turn-based strategy experience Skyworld back in 2017, offering a mashup of several genres. Today, the company in collaboration with Vive Studios have announced a new title in the franchise, a multiplayer card-battler called Skyworld: Kingdom Brawl

Skyworld - Lost Worlds

Designed to be a highly competitive cross-platform experience, Skyworld: Kingdom Brawl will allow players to unlock, collect and upgrade dozens of cards to build powerful decks. This being virtual reality (VR) they’ll be able to see their cards come alive as they cast spells and summon forces to wipe their opponents off the map. As a multiplayer focused title, players can go it alone or join a clan, taking on opponents from around the globe in regular online tournaments to rank on the global leaderboards.

“We set out to deliver a consistent, uncompromising cross-platform experience across PC VR and standalone VR hardware with Skyworld: Kingdom Brawl and it’s exciting to see how far we’ve been able to push the devices; from drawing massive numbers of units on screen to delivering awesome combat effects,” said Trevor Blom, Lead Tech at Vertigo Studios in a statement.

Having partnered with Vive Studios, Vertigo Games will be debuting Skyworld: Kingdom Brawl at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2019, offering attendees a cross-platform multiplayer hands-on demo on HTC Vive Pro and the HTC Vive Focus in the VR Play Area.

“Vertigo Games and Vive Studios have delivered on the VR industry’s desire for a gripping multiplayer game where players can battle friends regardless of their different VR hardware,” said Joel Breton, Vice President, Vive Studios. “We are very excited to be partnering with Vertigo Games to bring Skyworld Kingdom Brawl to the entire VR community.”

The studios are celebrating today’s announcement by launching the original Skyworld on Viveport Subscription today. As for the official launch of Skyworld: Kingdom Brawl, that will take place on 2nd April 2019, supporting HTC Vive, HTC Vive Pro, HTC Vive Focus, Oculus Rift and Windows Mixed Reality headsets. An HTC Vive Focus Plus version is scheduled for later this year. For any further updates on Skyworld: Kingdom Brawl, keep reading VRFocus.

Skyworld Translates Perfectly To PSVR, For What It’s Worth

Skyworld Translates Perfectly To PSVR, For What It’s Worth

Remember Skyworld? It’s that other VR app from Arizona Sunshine developer Vertigo Games, the one that didn’t quite enjoy the same level of critical success as its zombie-slaying brethren, at least on our part. Well it’s coming to PSVR early next year and, for what it’s worth, Vertigo seems to have done an ace job handling the port.

Skyworld is a blend of turn-based and real-time strategy. For the bulk of gameplay, you’ll be building out a town filled with the usual assortment of bases and units that will gather resources for you. You can move a General unit every turn and, when you’re satisfied your forces are robust enough, take on the enemy in card-based battles. Either that or the enemy will come hunting for you and you’ll find yourself on the back foot.

One of our favorite things about the game is the cutesy presentation, and that’s been retained in the PSVR port. Skyworld has an adorable action figure aesthetic that makes exploring its model-sized worlds an absolute delight. Better yet, the diorama levels are just as easy to navigate on PSVR as they were on PC; Skyworld is a 100% 180-degree experience and, during my demo, there were no awkward instances of losing tracking or wrestling with Move buttons. It all felt entirely natural, right down to the little interactions like grabbing and spinning the table to see more of the world.

I asked Vertigo if there were going to be any big changes to the PSVR version of the game and they told me this was pretty much a straight port. That means this edition isn’t likely to win around anyone that wasn’t sold on the original version. While Skyworld nails its presentation, it remains true that there isn’t a whole lot of depth to the game. In our review we said: “Skyworld has some good ideas, but ultimately its full potential is unrealized. I applaud Vertigo for trying something new, but when it comes down to it, VR doesn’t really enhance a board game and simple strategy experience like this, and it often became more tedious and convoluted than fun.”

That remains the case here. The game’s real-time battles don’t inspire much strategic gameplay so much as a hectic free-for-all of deploying units faster than your enemy can in order to win ground. You don’t feel like you have an overwhelming amount of control, more just hoping for the best.

Still, if you have a friend whom with you share an affinity for strategic gaming, Skyworld has enjoyable online multiplayer and if you’re craving this type of experience in VR you don’t have many other choices.

Skyworld hits PSVR in early 2019.
