Resident Evil 2 & 3 Can Now be Played In VR

Resident Evil 2

The virtual reality (VR) modding community has done some truly exceptional work over the years with titles like Alien Isolation and more recently MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries. The latest comes from creator praydog, who released a VR mod on New Years Day for Resident Evil 2 and 3.

In development for several months, praydog uploaded the mods to GitHub allowing anyone who owns a PC copy of the survival horror to jump back in, this time ramping up the scares thanks to VR’s immersive capabilities. The modder achieved this thanks to another one of their projects, REFramework, which is capable of adding 6 degrees-of-freedom (6DoF) VR support to most RE Engine titles.

Bringing a Resident Evil videogame into VR is no easy task simply because most are in third-person, VR tends to work best in first-person; especially where atmospheric horror is concerned. So not only are Resident Evil 2 and 3 now in first-person, but the mod also offers essential features like full gun control and weapon collision. You can point and shoot just like you normally would in a VR shooter, you can throw grenades and physically use the knife to dish out damage.

Resi fans know that the games tend to feature a lot of cutscenes so you will find sequences where you’ll jump between a first-person viewpoint and the various cameras each title employs. These are 3D cutscenes, however, rather than in a virtual window, ensuring the immersion isn’t broken too much. Even so, Resident Evil 2 and 3 in VR both look like worthy additions to the franchises ever-growing VR roster.

This originally began back in 2017 with Resident Evil 7 Biohazard supporting PlayStation VR. Then last year you had the excellent remake of Resident Evil 4 specifically for the Meta Quest 2.

Can’t wait to play either Resident Evil 2 or 3 in VR? Well, take a look below at a couple of gameplay videos to see both versions in action thanks to leadergamer1 and Gamertag VR.

Plus there’s more on the horizon from the VR modding community. As VRFocus reported in December, experienced VR modder Luke Ross is working on a version of Cyberpunk 2077 that’s expected to arrive at some point this month. For further VR mod updates, keep reading VRFocus.

Resident Evil 2 & 3 VR Mods Now Available

The hotly anticipated Resident Evil 2 and 3 VR mods are now available.

VR modder praydog has been working on these ports for the past few months, but just launched both mods over on GitHub. We’ve already gone hands-on with the Resident Evil 2 VR mod ourselves. You can see some gameplay below, though take note that this is an older build.

All-in-all it’s an incredibly impressive effort. Not only has the developer got both games running in first-person but there’s also full motion controller support too, really embedding you in the experience. Weapon collision has been implemented so you can realistically swing a knife, and you can even watch all of the game’s original cutscenes in full 3D rather than just cutting to a virtual window (though, fair warning, this does break the composition of some scenes).

You’ll of course need to own the original games to play the mods and you’ll want a decent rig too given the added performance requirements VR adds on top of already-demanding games.

Between these VR mods and official ports, it’s now possible to play a large number of the mainline Resident Evil games with a headset. Resident Evil 7 got a great PSVR version all the way back in 2017 and Resident Evil 4 came to Quest 2 in October 2021. We’ve still got our fingers crossed that Resident Evil 8 will also be getting full VR support later down the line.

Watch: Incredible Resident Evil 2 VR Mod Has First-Person And Motion Controls

We’ve played the incredible Resident Evil 2 VR mod from praydog, with 10 minutes of gameplay below.

We first reported that the modder was working on VR integration for Capcom’s two recent remakes back in August. Work on Resident Evil 2 specifically has come along pretty far since then, so much so that we were able to get our first hands-on with the upcoming mod and play through some of the opening sequences in the game. Take a look below.

This mod gives you optional first-person support with motion controls (you can also play it in the standard third-person view with a controller). It’s not available to all just yet, but it’s coming soon and it’s really taking shape. It’s incredible to experience the game’s intricately detailed world in first-person, and shining the flashlight in VR feels great. The 2019 remake of the game is also one of the scarier entries in the series, and that definitely shines through here. Just take note that you’ll need a beefy PC to handle the strain.

The Resident Evil series is no stranger to VR, of course. Resident Evil 7 remains one of the best PSVR games to date and last month Capcom teamed with Meta to release Resident Evil 4 VR on the Oculus Quest 2, which we thought was great. We’ve also still got our fingers crossed that the recently-released Resident Evil 8 will also get VR support when the PS5 VR headset finally launches.

Resident Evil 2 & 3 VR Mods In The Works

VR modder praydog is working on mods for Capcom’s recent remakes of Resident Evil 2 and 3.

A first (and very early) look at the mod was posted online today. It shows footage from inside Raccoon City Police Department before moving out into the city in a sequence seen in Resident Evil 3.

Take a look below but, again, the mod is very early on so you’ll have to excuse the rubbery arms and side-by-side recording.

Even with those issues considered, though, this seems like impressive work. Both Resident Evil 2 and 3 are played in third-person, so praydog has not only had to get them running in first-person but also implement motion controls for the guns.

These are remakes of the original PlayStation games that released for PC, PS4 and Xbox One a few years back. Resident Evil 2 in particular was incredibly well-received, and we shudder at the mere thought of meeting either the massive Tyrant or the dreaded Nemesis in VR. In fact we already saw the former inside headsets in a Japan-exclusive arcade experience in 2019.

No word on when the mods might release just yet but we’ll let you know as soon as we heard word.

Resident Evil 7 does of course already support PSVR but the game was in first-person. Earlier this year Capcaom also released the first-person Resident Evil 8 but there was no VR support to speak of. We’re hoping that support might be introduced for Sony’s PS5 VR headset, which is expected to launch next year. Meanwhile, Facebook is developing an official version of Resident Evil 4 for the Oculus Quest 2, which is expected to launch later this year.

That makes the first Resident Evil one of the few entries in the mainline series not to get some sort of VR support. Who’s going to change that?
