Rift Referrals Paused Recently Due to High Demand, Now Back Online

Oculus recently opened a referral program that lets U.S. residents generate discount codes for friends, family, or anybody in else that wants to buy a Rift or Go at 10% off. That program proved to be extremely popular, at least for Rift, as the company had to put a temporary hold on Rift referrals due to high demand over the past few days. If you experienced an issue lately sending Rift referrals, Oculus says you can start sending again.

When users tried to generate referral codes for Rift + Touch up until yesterday, they were greeted with this message:

“Your referral couldn’t be sent at this time because we are currently out of referral codes. Please try again later.”

We reached out to the company to understand more, and an Oculus spokesperson said this to Road to VR:

“Due to high demand, we temporarily paused the referral program as our systems caught up. As of today Rift owners can now resume sending referral codes. The original limit of 3 codes per person is still in effect.”

The stoppage was likely due to high demand experienced over the Black Friday & Cyber Monday period which saw Rift go as low as $350 when purchased from Oculus and its retail partners.

With a referral link, that knocked another 10% off the price, bringing it to an all-time low of $315. Rift + Touch is regularly priced at $400, making the deal an obvious target for bargain hunters and their Oculus device pals which saw an Oculus Store credit kickback between $20 – $30 for every Rift/Go referral.

At this time, referrals can only be generated by U.S. based users who have already bought either a Rift or Go. The resultant discount code can be redeemed by anyone living in the company’s 22 supported countries however.

Oculus Launches Referral Program, Free Store Credit When a Friend Buys Rift or Go

As the adage goes, the more, the merrier. Oculus is taking it to heart this holiday season in the US with its new referral program that could net you, and up to three friends significant savings on hardware and content.

If a friend or family follows your referral link, they’ll automatically get a 10% discount off Oculus Rift or Oculus Go.

Thirty days after shipment of your buddy’s Oculus device, you’ll get $30 in Store credit if they purchased a Rift, and $20 in credit is they purchased a Go. Oculus Store credit can be used to buy games, experiences, DLC—any digital purchase on the Oculus storefront.

Completing just one Rift referral, you could get a number of top games including SUPERHOT VR, Beat Saber, Project CARS, and Moss.

One Oculus Go referral could get you top-rated titles such as Eclipse: Edge of Light, Virtual Virtual Reality, and Catan VR.

There’s a few stipulations to consider: The program is only available in the US currently. There’s also a limit to three invites per user. Oculus Store expires one year from date of issuance, doesn’t have cash value, and can only be used for digital content purchases on the Store. Here’s the full rules governing Store credit.

Make VR Even More Inviting With the Oculus Referral Program

In the consumer retail world referral programmes are a great way of drumming up extra business, partially because it relies on good old word of mouth, and some discount incentives. Ahead of the busy festive season, Oculus has chosen to launch its own referral initiative.

Oculus Go GDC Promo 03The Oculus Referral Program is designed to make purchasing a new VR headset cheaper whilst giving current owners credit towards new content.

Oculus explains how the process works: “When your friend purchases Oculus Rift or Oculus Go through your invitation, they will get 10% off their purchase. Thirty days following the date your friend’s order is shipped, you’ll automatically get $30 USD in Oculus Store credit for an Oculus Rift referral or $20 USD in Oculus Store credit for an Oculus Go referral, applicable towards purchases of digital content from the Oculus Store. Limit 3 invites per user.”

So that could mean up to an additional $90 in your Oculus Store account – if you got three friends contemplating buying an Oculus Rift.

Oculus Rift & TouchDo take note of the terms though, especially the last sentence: “Oculus Store credits have no cash value, can only be used for purchases of digital content in the Oculus Store, and expire one year from date of issuance. You will not receive Oculus Store credit in the event a purchase made through your invitation is returned within thirty (30) days of date of purchase.” That 30 day delay will most likely mean you’ll miss the Oculus Store winter sale if you do make any referrals.

It’s also worth noting that for those interested in a headset Black Friday may offer a better deal (last year the Oculus Rift went down to $349), plus check if your country is eligible – currently, the offer isn’t available here in the UK.
