No Man’s Sky Gets A Space Whale, Alvo Getting New Map – VR Games On Our Radar This Week

No Man’s Sky getting space whales and more maps for Alvo are just some of the new VR games and updates on our radar this week!

Every week we get a lot of updates on new VR games at Upload – so much so that we don’t have time to cover them all. This week we talked about news from Fast Travel Games, Outlier, Shores of Loci and more, but here are some other titles we didn’t get to take a look at.

Lockdown VR: Circus Of The Dead

This is a curious little VR escape room game. You find yourself locked in a dressing room at a circus and work with friends to solve a series of challenges and unlock the exit. You’re also bears. Because why not? Look our for a Steam launch on June 1.

Cave VR

Cave VR

A strange-looking VR puzzler. You’re trapped in a cave a need to find a way out, but mysterious ruins present different challenges along the way. Visually it looks pretty interesting, but who knows if the gameplay will hold up. It comes to Steam on June 3.

Garden of the Sea

Garden of the Sea Update

Neat Corp’s adorable VR farming sim is back with another round of updates. A free patch this week added new merchants to the game, which means new trinkets to decorate your islands with.

No Man’s Sky

Another month, another significant new update for one of VR’s biggest games. The Leviathan update adds a new expedition that traps players in a time loop with roguelike mechanics. This comes with an enromous space whale you that can recruit into your fleet. Can this game get any better?

Real VR Fishing

Real VR Fishing

New stages are coming to the VR fishing game and they’ll be free for anyone that owns the original US West DLC. Starting in June you’ll get bi-weekly updates with new environments, the first landing you in Utah. Stay tuned for an official release date soon.

Alvo

A whole host of new content is coming to multiplayer FPS, Alvo, in the near future. That includes a free new map called Retreat, which is arriving soon. You can also expect a launch on PC VR headsets and community maps, too.

Zombie Range

Practice your throwing arm in this sort of football game that has you chucking a ball at cardboard cutouts of the undead. Aim for high scores and reach the top Slayer level. Or, y’know, go outside and throw a real ball. It’s out now on App Lab.

No Man’s Sky Update Lets You Become An Outlaw

It’s been a few months, which means it must be time for another No Man’s Sky update.

This time around developer Hello Games is introducing the Outlaws Update, with a focus on shady dealings and space pirates. You’ll now find Outlaw systems that are much more hostile than other areas in the game. Should you so choose, you’ll have the option to go on missions set by pirates, smuggle illegal goods across the galaxy and slip past the authorities.

With so much focus on space-based action, Hello Games is also making some key changes to ships and flight. Space combat has been overhauled to be more responsive, with new visual effects from weapons and shields being added to enemy ships. Weapons now have secondary effects and you’ll also be able to fight within a planet’s atmosphere.

But that’s not all; you can now assign wingmen to form a squadron, and there’s also a new solar starship type, which is the first to be added to the game since the living ships update from a few years ago.

As you can see in the trailer above, there’s also new cosmetic items like capes that come with new cloth simulation physics, so you can feel like a superhero as you smuggle goods.

As always, you can expect all of this content to work in the VR version of the game too. At this point, No Man’s Sky must surely be the biggest VR title out there? That makes us all the more hopeful for a PSVR 2 version when the headset launches later down the line.

‘No Man’s Sky’ Sentinel Update Brings Combat Overhaul, Graphics Bump for PS4 Pro

No Man’s Sky’s redemption arc isn’t over yet, as the open universe space sim has added some new combat challenges to the game in its 3.8 update, dubbed ‘Sentinel’. If you’re playing on PSVR via PlayStation 4 Pro, the update also includes a bump in image quality.

Hello Games released its latest update on all supported platforms yesterday, including PSVR on PS4 and PS5, and SteamVR headsets on PC.

There aren’t a ton of VR specific updates here—No Man’s Sky is already fairly well optimized for VR gameplay. Besides the image quality boost for PS4 Pro users, the studio says it’s modified the positioning of player weapons when in VR, something that ought to help with aiming more naturally. Not much, but we’ll take it.

The Sentinel update instead centers on combat, or more specifically those nosy little police drones that litter the game: sentinels. Up until now, they’ve been mostly just an annoyance, but now sentinels are getting a big boost in abilities for some more engaging PvE action.

You’ll also be able to install a Minotaur AI Pilot within the Exomech, basically making for a mech buddy who follows you around and helps out in combat. There’s a bunch more, including active camo and a few new weapons to play with too.

Here’s an abbreviated list of changes in the Sentinel update. Check out the full change log here.

  • Three new types of Sentinel Drone have been added: Heavy Combat Drones, Repair Drones and Summoner Drones.
  • Sentinel Drones now deploy static combat shields, creating a dynamic battlefield. Players may manoeuvre to take advantage of these shields for themselves, or open fire to destroy the shield.
  • The sentinels now deploy their forces in greater numbers, to create more dramatic firefights.
  • A new high-level Sentinel has been added, the Hardframe Battle Mech.
  • PC support for AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 1.0 has been enabled.
  • A new class of weapon has been added – the Neutron Cannon, a charged energy weapon that does not use projectile ammunition.
  • A new class of secondary grenade launcher has been added – the Paralysis Mortar, stun projectiles with a blast radius.
  • A new class of secondary Multi-Tool utility has been added, the Cloaking Device.

No Man’s Sky Gets Big Combat Overhaul, PS4 Pro VR Support In Sentinel Update

No Man’s Sky’s latest free update is all about improving the game’s combat mechanics.

Combat has always been a part of No Man’s Sky, but it’s fair to say that it’s never been as deep as other areas of the experience. This week’s Sentinel update adresses that, adding new weapons and mechanics that change up the fight with the game’s robotic space police force, the Sentinels. Check it all out in the trailer below.

For starters, you’ll now be able to arm yourself with a Neutron Cannon as well as a camo cloaking device and a stun grenade, as well as take your exomech into battle as a companion using new onboard AI.

Sentinels, meanwhile, are also getting an upgrade. There’s a new elite class that includes more dangerous units, including a hostile exomech. They’ll be able to use energy shields and rip up terrain with new weapons. You’ll also be able to dive deeper into their own lore with challenging battles at Sentinel Pillars. You can even get your own friendly robotic companions to aid you in your journey.

Elsewhere this update adds improved VR visuals for PS4 Pro players and also changes the position of player weapons when playing in VR.

Sentinel is available now across PS4, PC and non-VR platforms. Expect more from No Man’s Sky later in the year. We’ve still got our fingers crossed for PSVR 2 support, when the headset is released.

No Man’s Sky’s Emergence Expedition Arrives In-Time For Dune And Halloween

No Man’s Sky is killing two birds with one stone with its new Emergence expedition. Or is that two worms with one stone?

The game’s fourth major expedition was revealed today. It sends players to the barren planet of Wasan, a wasteland infested with enormous Titan Worms. They’ll look familiar to anyone that’s been looking forward to this week’s release of Dune on the big screen, and carry a nice hint of horror just in time for Halloween, too. Check it out in the trailer below.

No Man’s Sky Emergence Trailer

You’ll be on the hunt for impact sites in a quest to destroy the ‘Hungering Tendrils’, which we don’t care to picture in our heads. Completing this expedition will unearth more of the universe’s lore, too.

Emergence isn’t just a new expedition, though. It’s also a mini-update that adds new types of diverse sandworms and (as you may have guessed) the ability to ride them. You’ll also get new cosmetic items and there are further updates to some of the game’s visual effects too.

This isn’t one of Hello Games’ typically stacked updates, then, but riding sandworms in VR does sound like a heck of a lot of fun, doesn’t it? As always, this update supports PSVR and PC VR headsets too.

It’s been a busy year for No Man’s Sky with a regular rotation of significant updates. Hopefully, there’s more to come before the end of the year and we’re still holding our breath for compatibility with the upcoming PS5 VR headset, too.

Latest ‘No Man’s Sky’ Update Makes You Mayor of an Alien Town, Now Live on PSVR & SteamVR

There seems to be no end to the redemption arc of No Man’s Sky (2016), as today marks the release of the sci-fi exploration game’s 17th major update. Now live on PSVR and SteamVR headsets, No Man’s Sky brings base building to new heights in its ‘Frontiers’ update by letting you find, manage, and build your own alien town.

The largest bit of the update is the addition of new planetary settlements, which can now be found in inhabited systems dotted across the known universe.

Once you’ve touched down on the right procedurally generated settlement, you’ll be able to do things like name the town, choose what to build by gathering resources, commission festivals, resolve arguments, and help repel Sentinel attacks to protect the frontier settlements.

Check out the trailer below to see Frontiers in action:

Additionally, Frontiers brings a new base-building menu to the game to make part-picking easier, 10 more save slots, multi-colored nebulas, and enhanced destruction effects. You can check out the full patch notes here.

Design-wise, No Man’s Sky still isn’t on par with a native VR game due to things like an overreliance on 2D menus, but its massive size and continuously growing feature set seems to keep reeling us back in well after the game’s VR implementation was initially released in August 2019.

No Man’s Sky offers PSVR support on PS4 & PS5, and SteamVR headsets through the PC version of the game. It’s currently 50% off on both the EU PlayStation Store and Steam, bringing it to just $30. Virtual reality support comes part and parcel with the deal, so you can play in flatscreen mode or in VR.

No Man’s Sky Gets On-Planet Settlements In Frontiers Update

Another big new update is launching for No Man’s Sky, this time introducing on-planet settlements filled with buildings and NPCs.

When Hello Games’ massive space sim launched years back its planets were often cold and lonely, with the game’s NPCs only congregating on space stations. With the Frontiers Update, Hello Games is adding settlements in which clusters of aliens live. That’s complete with new building types and, interestingly, procedural interiors, meaning the insides of those buildings have been randomly generated much like the planets themselves have. Check out the trailer here.

You will, of course, be able to lead your own settlement and manage everything from town planning to policy decisions. Citizens will get in arguments that you’ll be able to resolve and your town will grow with more resources.

Alongside the settlements comes an overhaul to the game’s base-building system with new UI and parts, yet more visual improvements and the third season of expeditions. Plus there’s a new Twitch campaign coming, offering up rewards for watch other streamers play.

As usual, all of this applies to the VR version of the game, which offers the entire experience to play inside PSVR and PC VR headsets. Back at the beginning of the year, Hello Games updates the game’s PS4 version to take full advantage of PS5 visuals when running on the newer console. Obviously, though, we’re hoping No Man’s Sky will be one of the titles to support the upcoming PS5 VR headset when it arrives.
