Gran Turismo Sport Updates Will Be Winding Down In 2020

If you’ve been enjoying the frankly absurd amount of free updates for Polyphony Digital’s Gran Turismo Sport since launch in 2017, you might want to prepare for a quieter year.

Studio head Kazunori Yamauchi suggested as much on Twitter this weekend. Teasing an update arriving soon, he added: “This year’s updates are modest in frequency and volume.”

So don’t expect to see a wealth of new cars and tracks for Gran Turismo Sport in 2020. Every car and track that’s been added since launch can be played inside the game’s optional PSVR support, which offers either 1v1 AI races or time trials. The experience itself is first-rate, but Gran Turismo Sport’s VR support is notoriously bare bones.

Three new cars will be added in this latest update. The tweet above has some silhouettes which I’m sure people smarter than me can pick out.

With any luck, the winding down of free updates means that Polyphony Digital is ramping up production on the next iteration of the Gran Turismo series, presumably for PS5. Yamauchi confirmed a new game was in development in the middle of 2019, adding that the transition to new consoles would help improve the state of VR support.

“The first thing that’s going to be affected by more power is VR,” the developer said. “I don’t think that there’s anything else that requires that much processing power. I really like VR; I’m one to believe in the possibilities of it, and it’s very suited for a driving game.”

Hopefully that means PSVR support is a lock for Gran Turismo on PS5.

Sony PlayStation Awards Asia: Skyrim VR, No Heroes Allowed VR! und Gran Turismo Sport ausgezeichnet

Sony PlayStation Awards Asia – PlayStation VR: Skyrim VR, No Heroes Allowed VR und Gran Turismo Sport feiern kommerziellen Erfolg

PSVR Winners At Sony’s PlayStation Awards Are Not What We Expected

PSVR Winners At Sony’s PlayStation Awards Are Not What We Expected

Sony has just announced the winners of the 2018 PlayStation Awards in Japan, and the list of VR titles raises an eyebrow.

Bethesda’s Skyrim VR, Aquire’s No Heroes Allowed VR! and Polyphony Digital’s Gran Turismo Sport all took home prizes in this category. Before you start asking where Astro Bot is, take note that these aren’t selected on quality but instead simply recognize the best-selling PSVR games in Asia region in the past year. That would explain why one of PSVR’s biggest games, Skyrim, made it onto the list despite releasing in 2017 and why No Heroes Allowed, a series better known in Japan, also thrived.

It is a little strange to see Gran Turismo Sport on the list, though. Fans will know that Polyphony’s 2017 racing sim only offered barebones, optional PSVR support compared to the rest of the game that could be played on a flat screen. It’s a shame to see the game take a spot that could have been given to a dedicated VR game, though we don’t know if Sony is judging this based upon how many people played GT Sport’s VR mode or otherwise.

Still, with Sony getting so many great games onto PSVR in recent months including the likes of Astro Bot and Firewall, hopefully we’ll see some more VR-angled games winning next year.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR

“The achievement made by The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR is one by way of both hardware and design to capitalise upon this. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR’s level of immersion is simply fantastic, and while Bethesda Softworks could well have gone the route of DOOM VFR and created a shorter spin-off experience, developing a brand new The Elder Scrolls instalment specifically for VR would have taken many years and far too much in the way of resources for what is still a nascent audience. As it stands some may find the price point of the videogame a bitter pill to swallow, but for those who dreamed of a truly immersive role-playing experience, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR is simply the best opportunity available today.” – Read VRFocus’ Editor Kevin Joyce’s review of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR.

Gran Turismo Sport Gets Another F1 Car, Microtransactions, New Course In July Update

Gran Turismo Sport Gets Another F1 Car, Microtransactions, New Course In July Update

Yet another free update is on the way for Sony’s Gran Turismo Sport, though not all of its new features are so cheap.

For starters, there’s the usual assortment of new cars. Fans of March’s update, which added the Gran Turismo F1500T-A, will be pleased to know that the Mercedes AMG F1 W08 EQ Power+ 2017 (Gr.X) also makes its way into the game with this update, bringing us that bit closer to a VR F1 racing game. There’s also the Daihatsu Copen Active Top ’02 (N100), Honda Beat ’91 (N100), HONDA S660 ’15 (N100), Ferrari 250 GTO CN.3729GT ’62 (Gr.X), Ford GT LM Spec II Test Car (Gr.3) and Mazda 787B ’91 (Gr.1). I’m sure if you know your cars that all means something to you, but it just means shiny new VR playthings to me.

There’s also a new track to race around. France’s Circuit de Sainte-Croix has been digitized and features three configurations that can also be played in reverse.

Perhaps the most important addition, though, is microtransactions. Once the update hits, all of the game’s existing cars that cost less then 2,000,000 in-game will be available to purchse on the PlayStation Store. Based on the screenshot above, a car that costs 184,000 in-game will cost you $0.99 on the store, for example. So, basically, if you don’t want to sink in the time to unlock a particular type of vehicle, you can now just throw down a bit of extra cash to get it straight away. That might be handy for VR users that simply want to try out a specific car.

As usual, all of this new content will be accessible via the game’s limited VR mode, which allows you to either take part in one-on-one races against AI with any car on any track, or race alone in VR time trials, which were also added last March. We’ve always loved how it played, we just wish there was a bit more to it.

No word on the exact date for the update yet but, given that there’s two days left in July, expect it to hit very soon.

Something For The Weekend: Post-E3 PlayStation VR Deals

From fighting demons with big guns, flying through the skies over Paris, or walking with dinosaurs, there is something for everyone. As always, be sure to check back every weekend for even more deals right here on VRFocus.

DOOM VFR screenshot

DOOM VFR

“Ultimately DOOM VFR stands as a fine example of just what can be achieved with the FPS genre in VR as of today, lining-up against Robo Recall as an action-heavy experience that throws the rulebook out of the window. It’s true that the visual quality has suffered dramatically and the control systems could be seen as far too awkward by many, but the fact that DOOM VFR pushes so hard against the VR grain makes it well worth any PlayStation VR owner’s time and money.” – Read VRFoucs’ Editor Kevin Joyce’s review of DOOM VFR.

DOOM VFR is available now for £14.99 (GBP) down from the usual £19.99.

gran turismo sport image

This is how racing was meant to be.

Volume

British based developer Mike Bithell is known for his popular indie title Thomas Was Alone and Volume. The latter of which has a VR expansion which is available for free within the base game. Players are tasked to sneak around and avoid enemies, traps, and all sorts of bad things as they try to steal from the rich and give to the poor. Making use of a number of gadgets to get the job done, players will need to navigate through 100 levels of stealth action, along with then being able to enter Volume: Coda which offers plenty more of the stealth action, all within PlayStation VR.

Volume is available now for £3.29 (GBP) down from £14.99 and includes the free Volume: Coda VR expansion.

Light Tracer Screenshot

Light Tracer

Light Tracer is a well-crafted VR platform title. Once you get used to the controls, it becomes challenging enough to keep you coming back for more. There are some very frustrating elements, but not enough to spoil the gameplay entirely. Having said that, Light Tracer is at its best when played in relatively small doses. Like a plate of snacks to nibble on instead of a feast, but still just as tasty.” – Read VRFocus’ Staff Writer Rebecca Hills-Duty’s review of Light Tracer.

Light Tracer is only £3.29 (GBP) down from £9.99.

PlayStation VR Worlds

Easily the must have PlayStation VR title, PlayStation VR Worlds offers players a number of different experiences to lose them self in and witness the full extent of what VR has to offer. Resident Evil 7 Biohazard is currently £14.99 (GBP) down from £19.99 with PlayStation Plus members getting an extra 5% discount.

Bloody Zombies

Bloody Zombies

“The visual design of Bloody Zombies has obviously taken VR into account throughout, with the 2D characters appearing like cardboard cutouts when the VR player moves their view alongside the action opposed to in front of it. This is obviously why nDreams – a publisher that has solely committed to VR content – took an interest in Paw Print Games’ Bloody Zombies to begin with. And they were right to do so, as while Bloody Zombies doesn’t reinvent the scrolling beat-‘em-up wheel, it does offer a convincing argument for 2D videogames making the jump to the more immersive medium.” – Read VRFocus’ Editor Kevin Joyce’s review of Bloody Zombies.

Bloody Zombies is currently on sale for £4.49 (GBP) down from £10.99.

ARK Park - DLC - Screenshot

Football Nation VR 2018

Football Nation VR Tournament 2018 (Formally VRFC: Virtual Reality Football Club)

“VRFC: Virtual Reality Football Club remains one of the best sports experiences VR has to offer. More than that however, it’s also one of the best social VR experiences currently available, with the tension of competition and the misery of defeat likely to help make new friends (and potentially enemies) across the VR community. VRFC: Virtual Reality Football Club is a welcome foundation for sports simulations in VR, and with the FIFA franchise now surpassing 25 editions (not including the many spin-offs such as FIFA Street and FIFA World Cup), it’s a wonder to think exactly how much of VRFC: Virtual Reality Football Club will remain in VR football 25 years from now.” – Read VRFocus’ Editor Kevin Joyce’s review of VRFC: Virtual Reality Football Club.

Football Nation VR Tournament 2018 is available for only £6.99 (GBP) right now on sale from £9.99 for PlayStation Plus members.

That is all for this week but remember that VRFocus gathers all the best sales and deals every week, so check back next weekend at the same time to discover more.

Gran Turismo Sport Gets Yet More New Cars This Week

Gran Turismo Sport Gets Yet More New Cars This Week

Ready for more cars in Gran Turismo Sport? No? Well you’re getting them anyway.

The next update for Polyphony Digital’s PSVR-supported racer is due to release this week, series creator Kazunori Yamauchi recently confirmed on Twitter. It’s set to add nine new cars for free. We don’t know exactly what these vehicles will be but you’re welcome to try and guess based on the teaser image below. The replies to the tweet are filled with fans connecting the dots, so check those out too.

As always, you’ll be able to jump into these cars and experience lifelike driving in the game’s PSVR mode, which now consists of both 1-on-1 AI racing and a time trial mode. While GT Sport’s PSVR-support has always been considered fairly barebones, the actual experience of driving these cars in VR is hard to beat, so it’s great to see more support come to the racing sim.

We’re not yet sure what other features will be added in this update, though hopefully VR fans will have some more content to look forward to. Perhaps we can expect new track layouts for starters.

GT Sport Discounted to £10.85/$13.99

Polyphony Digital’s Gran Turismo is one of the most popular racing videogame franchises of all time, and the PlayStation 4 edition of the series, GT Sport, proved to be no different. Now however, 19 months after its debut, the videogame is available to purchase for some fantastically reduced prices, including one retailer offering more than a 75 percent discount on the suggested retail price (SRP).

GT Sport screenshot

Often considered the definitive motor racing experience, Gran Turismo is back on PlayStation 4, offering players instant access to the fastest, most desirable driving machines on the planet. More than 174 of the best cars in the world are available in GT Sport, from Vision Gran Turismo concept vehicles and exclusive prototypes to the best in real world motoring. All cars have been built from the ground up to deliver the most realistic handling cars ever available in a Gran Turismo videogame, and every vehicle has been digitally recreated in exhaustive detail, from the internal structure of the headlights to the stitching of the seats.

Building on the popularity of the numerous racetracks featured in previous Gran Turismo titles, including the Nürburgring Nordschleife (North Loop), a number of tracks featured in GT Sport appear in the series for the first time. These include the “Tokyo Expressway” and the half-mile oval dubbed the “Northern Isle Speedway.” A total of 17 locations with over 40 courses feature in GT Sport, taking drivers everywhere from the Japanese metropolis to the Mexican-American border.

Of course, the most important aspect of GT Sport for readers of VRFocus is the PlayStation VR compatibility, originally revealed way back in 2015. The VR Tour Mode pits players head-to-head in online races, and the post-launch addition of VR Time Trials offers an enjoyable – if less than comprehensive – VR bonus to the core GT Sport videogame.

GT Sport is currently available in physical retail packaging for £10.85 GBP / $13.99 USD via Play Asia, while Amazon is also offering the title at a discounted price of £19.37. For comparison sake, UK retailer GAME is currently listing the title at £44.99.

GT Sport screenshot

The PlayStation VR software catalogue is rapidly increasing with both indie releases and AAA blockbusters such as GT Sport, with some new titles expected to be announced at next month’s Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), Los Angeles. VRFocus will of course keep you updated with all the latest details.

‘Gran Turismo Sport’ Update Brings Time Trials to ‘PSVR Mode’

Gran Turismo Sport (2017), the VR-compatible PS4 racing sim, just got an update that lets PSVR owners take a crack at two race circuits in time trial mode.

GT Sport isn’t exactly a fully fledged PSVR title as such, since you can’t play the full game in VR. You’re instead relegated to a much less extensive “VR Arcade” mode that features all racetracks but only a single AI opponent with a non-adjustable (and frankly laughable) difficulty.

Small recompense: you’ll now be able speed around both Nurburgring and Suzuka race circuits in time trial mode, which at very least adds a touch more replayablity to the title which has basically languished for PSVR owners since launch – outside the odd update that added more cars and tracks to the list, that is.

And no, the game still doesn’t feature multiplayer, and it’s possible it never will, according to a GameWatch interview (Japanese) with game designer Kazunori Yamauchi.

“Although I do not have plans for multiplayer at the moment, I am planning to make time trials possible in VR mode with future updates,” said Yamauchi.
