Sega Genesis Classics VR Livestream: Sonic, Streets Of Rage, And More!

Sega Genesis Classics VR Livestream: Sonic, Streets Of Rage, And More!

The Sega Genesis (or Mega Drive in the EU) is one of the all-time greatest game systems. It not only rivaled Nintendo’s empire, it even dethroned the NES and SNES for a brief period when Sega was ontop with its edgy marketing campaign and stellar lineup of 16-bit titles.

This week the Sega Genesis Classics collection released on consoles and also got a major update to the PC version on Steam, which includes online multiplayer, challenges, and VR support. Now you can join us as we step backwards in time to a kid’s room ripped right out of the 90s to sit down in front of the TV like old times and play some Genesis games.

We’ll be livestreaming Sega Genesis Classics VR today on PC using an HTC Vive and USB gamepad starting very soon (which means we’ll start at approximately 2:40PM PT) and aim to last for about an hour or so. We’re going to use Restream to hit both YouTube and Twitch at the same time!

You can see our archived streams all in  this one handy Livestream playlist over on the official UploadVR YouTube channel (which you should totally subscribe to by the way). We’re also rebooting our Twitch channel too.

Let us know which games you want us to livestream next and if you want to see more Budget Cuts in the future. Comment with any feedback down below!

Sega Mega Drive And Genesis Classics Get VR Support On Steam

Sega Mega Drive And Genesis Classics Get VR Support On Steam

The Sega Genesis will forever be an absolutely essential part of my childhood. I had over 60 games for the system growing up, countless controllers and joysticks, and spent hundreds if not thousands of hours completing the Sonic trilogy, adventuring through all four mainline Phantasy Star games, adventuring through my favorite Disney films like Aladdin and The Lion King, and generally getting to enjoy doing what Nintendon’t.

Life as a Genesis kid in the 90s was great and now, thanks to the power of VR, it doesn’t just have to be a memory. Rather than simply simulating a large screen in a void like PSVR’s theater mode, the Sega Mega Drive and Genesis Classics collection on Steam has official and robust Steam support.

As a single new feature in a large update full of new, free enhancements, the VR support is at first-glance an afterthought. But the real highlight is that it lets you experience all >50 Genesis games from the collection as if you’re sitting in a retro 90s-themed bedroom reminiscent of the one you or someone you knew may have grew up in. It reminds me a bit of the living room from Duck Season.

It’s lacking some highlights from my own childhood of course, but it gets the job done. Sonic and Golden Axe posters adorn the walls, the trusty Genesis is stored below the old rounded-screen CRT TV, and with a quality Genesis-style USB gamepad you’d be good to go. Although, any gamepad would work just fine — or you can even use the Vive wands as well, but I’d recommend a gamepad of some kind with a dedicated d-pad on it.

This is a pretty cool, free update. Also included are new challenge missions for each game, leaderboards, online multiplayer, mirror mode, and other graphics options. This same bundle just launched on consoles today, but there’s no word of the PS4 version having PSVR support. It’s only listed as Vive support right now. Also worth noting is that a similar effect has been possible for quite a long time using New Retro Arcade: Neon or just an emulator inside of Bigscreen.

If you’ve ever dreamed of playing Sonic, Streets of Rage, or Phantasy Star in VR before, then here you go. Probably now what you had in mind, but it’s still a great blast from the past.

Let us know what you think of these revived classics down in the comments below!

The Genesis Virtual Guide is a Modern Take on the Traditional Vehicle Manual

Traditional car manuals may soon become a thing of the past as manufacturers embrace augmented reality (AR) technology, so that customers can learn about their new car in a more informative and interactive way. The latest comes from US company Genesis, which has just released its Genesis Virtual Guide for the 2017 G80 and G90 models.

The Genesis Virtual Guide allows consumers to use their smartphone or tablet to get how-to information for repairs, maintenance and vehicle features. Using 2-D and 3-D tracking technology, the Virtual Guide is able to deliver useful levels of information related to specific parts of Genesis vehicles simply by pointing the smartphone or tablet’s camera at various point on the car.

“As a new luxury brand we continue to focus our efforts on the continually evolving customer expectations and innovations,” said Erwin Raphael, general manager of Genesis in the U.S. “Our mobile app strategy is designed around empowering our customers and helping them to save time and frustration. The Virtual Guide provides our owners with a new way to learn about and get to know their vehicles.”

The Genesis Virtual Guide can provide how-to information on the following features:

  • Smart Cruise Control
  • Bluetooth® phone pairing
  • Warning indicators
  • Clock
  • Smart trunk
  • Engine oil
  • Brake fluid
  • Fuse box
  • Air filter
  • Battery jump start
  • Washer fluid
  • Spare tire installation

“The Virtual Guide is going to wow our owners,” said Raphael. “It takes hundreds of pages of information and puts it on a device we know consumers touch all day long – their smartphone. And most of the content is in the form of videos, which we also know is the preferred method for consumers to digest information today.”

The guide supports both iOS and Android devices. It will also be compatible with 2018 models later this year.

New PlayStation VR Releases For The Week Of 11/27/16

New PlayStation VR Releases For The Week Of 11/27/16

Not much to look at this week, but there are a few things to look forward to not far off. We’ve got a dungeon crawler from the makers of Windlands, another giant bird flying game, and the glorious art of pinball, among others.

If you missed last week, you can see those new releases here. Also, UploadVR has launched the ‘UploadVR PS VR Community’ on PlayStation 4! Join up, find other gamers to play with, and engage in discussions.

O! My Genesis VR: Planet Dagoh, from XPEC Entertainment

Price: $2.99 (New Level DLC for Existing Game)

When we went hands-on with the game previously this month we called it one of VR’s best God games and its charm is shining through. We wrote that it “offers a glimpse of a potentially brilliant god game for PS VR.” This new level adds even more to the experience.

Recommendation: Get it. A great game is getting better.

How We Soar, from Penny Black Studios

Price: $19.99

Half the price of Eagle Flight, for approximately half the content. In How We Soar, You’ll fly around a picture-book style city, exploring, and uncovering its mysteries. This one is a single-player only phoenix-flying affair.

Recommendation: If you loved flying in Eagle Flight but didn’t care for multiplayer, this could be worth a look.

Crystal Rift, from Psytec Games

Price: $12.99

If you were ever a fan of old-school dungeon crawler RPGs like Might & Magic, Wizardry, or more recently, the Legends of Grimrock series, then this is a game for you. Crystal Rift is all turn-based and grid-based, so it’s not quite Elder Scrolls VR, but the visuals are nice and there’s plenty of content to get through.

Recommendation: It’s a very old-school style game adapted to VR, but it’s great fun for fans of the genre.

Pinball FX2 VR, from Zen Studios

Price: $14.99

It’s pinball, but in VR. Lots of great themed tables, like The Walking Dead, can be downloaded as DLC, and plenty of spectacular effects. We’ve interviewed the devs about it extensively and recently published our review. Lots of great content here.

Recommendation: For fans of the classic hobby that predates video games themselves, this is a must-buy.
