Ancient Amuletor Blossom Dance 01

Ancient Amuletor

Ancient Amuletor is a fun way to kill a few hours, with some simple, intuitive combat and enough interesting innovations to keep it fresh. Along with the lovely graphics making it nice to look at. Sadly though, the title lacks depth and longevity with only four levels and no particular incentive to reply. The developers have mentioned that some DLC is in the works, though, which could redeem this title above a simple, casual time-killer.” – Read VRFocus’ Staff Writer Rebecca Hills-Duty review of Ancient Amuletor here.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim screenshot

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR

“The achievement made by The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR is one by way of both hardware and design to capitalise upon this. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR’s level of immersion is simply fantastic, and while Bethesda Softworks could well have gone the route of DOOM VFR and created a shorter spin-off experience, developing a brand new The Elder Scrolls instalment specifically for VR would have taken many years and far too much in the way of resources for what is still a nascent audience. As it stands some may find the price point of the videogame a bitter pill to swallow, but for those who dreamed of a truly immersive role-playing experience, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR is simply the best opportunity available today.” – Read VRFocus’ Editor Kevin Joyce’s review of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR here.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR is £34.39 (GBP) down from the usual price of £49.99.

Ancient Amuletor Releases ‘Blossom Dance’ DLC

Developer Time of Virtual Reality (TVR) have released their second DLC pack for their virtual reality (VR) title Ancient Amuletor on PlayStation VR.

Ancient Amuletor Blossom Dance 01

Ancient Amuletor is a tower defense title set in an ancient world where players must do battle with magical creatures, monsters and other legendary foes in single-player and cooperative multiplayer for up to three people. In the latest DLC pack titled Blossom Dance, players will be able to play a Chiyo, a young mysterious samurai who may look charming with her tails but is deadly with her blade and therefore a formidable fighter.

Ancient Amuletor Blossom Dance 01

Along with the addition of Chiyo players will be able to enjoy some new maps and new enemies including the Ballon Goblin and Glider Goblin. On top of that there is a new boss in the title which comes in the form of the legendary Kraken joining the opposition. Players will need to make use of all their weapons and skills in order to survive the new challenges that await them in the Blossom Dance DLC pack.

The first DLC pack that was released for Ancient Amuletor was the ‘Into The Ice‘ pack which brought with it two new maps and a new hero, Kane the Viking. This warrior of the North embraced the Nordic theme and was a larger-than-life fighter who would throw weapons at his enemies. Kane was the fifth hero to be introduced to the title and now, Chiyo is the sixth.

VRFocus reviewed Ancient Amuletor with Staff Writer Rebecca Hills-Duty saying: “Ancient Amuletor is a fun way to kill a few hours, with some simple, intuitive combat and enough interesting innovations to keep it fresh. Along with the lovely graphics making it nice to look at.”

Currently Ancient Amuletor is available on PlayStation VR for the price of £14.99 (GBP) with both the Into The Ice and Blossom Dance DLC packs available as a bundle for only £1.99 (GBP). The Into The Ice DLC pack is available on it’s own as well, for the same price as the two packs bundled together. You can see the Blossom Dance DLC, and Chiyo, in action in the below trailer.

Ancient Amuletor Releases ‘Into The Ice’ DLC

Publisher Time of Virtual Reality have revealed that DLC for Ancient Amuletor will be getting DLC titled ‘Into the Ice’ that will be available from today, 29th August, 2017.

The DLC packs will be available for free to users who already own copies of the title for the next two weeks. After that, the Into The Ice DLC will be available for $2.99 (USD) from the PlayStation Store.

Into The Ice will contain two new maps, the Ice Cave, a frozen stage that is designed to reflect the Nordic theme of the DLC, and also The Void, a new level set in Ancient Egypt, which was previously teased on Twitter. A new playable hero will also be introduced, Kane the Viking, a warrior of the North who throws weapons at his enemies. Kane will be the fifth hero to be introduced to the title, in addition to existing heroes the Archer, Gunner, Puppeteer and Mage.

VRFocus previously reviewed Ancient Amuletor and gave it a generally positive review, saying: “The levels look beautiful, the use of Unreal Engine 4 clear in the graphical fidelity and colours. The title uses the ancient world as inspiration for the levels, which creates a nice ambiance, though the comic-book-like ‘kill’ and ‘slow’ pop-ups are jarringly out-of-place at times. Its also a shame that there is no plot or storyline to speak of, no voice acting or comments from the hero characters. It would be nice to know why we are defending these crystals, who the heroes are and why they are there.”

Ancient Amuletor has also recently received an update introducing left-handed support, better online functionality and a leaderboard.

VRFocus will bring you further news on Ancient Amuletor as it becomes available.

Ancient Amuletor Will Be Getting DLC

Publishers of PlayStation VR wave shooter Ancient Amuletor, Time of VR have announced on Twitter their intention to bring downloadable content to the title, starting with a new level titled The Void which will be released on 29th August, 2017.

Ancient Amuletor is a first-person wave shooter set in a fantasy world inspired by ancient civilisations such as the Ancient Egyptians. Players can control one of four hero characters, Mage, Gunner, Puppeteer or Archer. The goal is to cut down undead monsters before they can get to the power crystals and destroy them. Some levels feature boss fights against giant creatures such as a stone sphinx. Players can teleport around the arena and lay down traps, adding a strategic element and the option to switch hero on the fly is also present for if a different gameplay style is needed.

VRFocus previously reviewed Ancient Amuletor, giving it a positive review, saying: “Ancient Amuletor is a fun way to kill a few hours, with some simple, intuitive combat and enough interesting innovations to keep it fresh. Along with the lovely graphics making it nice to look at.”

So far, few details except the name and two screenshots of the new level have been revealed. The new ‘The Void’ level appears to be shrouded in night, creating a slightly different atmosphere as giant stone Anubis statues loom over the area.

There is no confirmation on what price point the DLC level will be set at, or if it will be free, as the developer has previously indicated its intention to release free DLC packs. It is not known at this point what other DLC may be in the works.

VRFocus will bring you further information on Ancient Amuletor as it becomes available.

Defending the Ancient World In Our Latest Gameplay Video

Earlier this month VRFocus reviewed PlayStation VR wave shooter Ancient Amuletor. This first-person shooter set in a fantasy-tinged version of ancient history puts the player in the role of one of four heroes. Watch how Rebecca fares as a Gunner in this new gameplay video.

The aim of Ancient Amuletor is simple – the player needs to defend the glowing crystals for hordes of attacking enemies, cutting them down with weaponry in hand, and using traps and strategic positioning to make sure none of the enemies get through.

The action is controlled using the PlayStation Move controllers, as it said in the VRFocus review: “The title is controlled using a pair of PlayStation Move controllers. This makes most of the actions nicely intuitive and immersive. Movement is handled by a simple teleport system that allows you to bounce to various fixed locations around the map. Being in the right place at the right time becomes part of the strategy. As does laying down traps once those become unlocked, as those can slow down enemies enough to allow the player to easily pick them off.” You can read the rest of our review Here.

Watch Rebecca have fun cutting down undead foes in the video below. For more gameplay videos, keep watching VRFocus.

New PSVR Releases For Week Of 06/25/17

It’s a busy time to be a PSVR fan! There’s a healthy amount of games on offer for Sony’s headset this week, and some of them are really worth checking out. If you’re a fan of shooting things then we’ve got plenty to check out. If you’re a fan of wall-crawling… well maybe still skip Spider-Man VR.

If you missed the previous entry of this list you can see those new releases here. UploadVR has launched the ‘UploadVR PS VR Community’ on PlayStation 4! Join up, find other gamers to play with, and engage in discussions with them.

Also, don’t forget to check out our list of the 9 Best PlayStation VR Games if you need any extra inspiration.

Arizona Sunshine, from Vertigo Games and Jaywalkers Interactive
Price: $39.99 (currently discounted)

If you’ve been craving another full FPS following Farpoint then Arizona Sunshine is here to answer the call. Wake up in the middle of a zombie apocalypse in the heat of the Arizona desert and make your way through its canyons as you fend off hordes of the undead. Supports PS Move, DualShock 4, and the PSVR Aim Controller.

Recommendation: The game’s definitely watered down from its PC release, but it’s still a lot of fun. Grab it.

Ancient Amuletor, from Ti Games
Price: $19.99 (currently discounted)

A tower defense game where you are the tower. Choose from a handful of classes and defend a series of crystals from incoming enemies using guns, spells, or a bow and arrow. Cooperative multiplayer for up to four people gives the game a social edge and the PlayStation Move controls put you in the experience more completely.

Recommendation: Amuletor is fun, though it’s a little light on content.

Spider-Man: Homecoming VR Experience
Price: Free

It’s finally time to put on the webs and become Spider-Man for the first time in VR. This tie-in experience to the upcoming Homecoming movie gives you just a taste of what it’s like to be Peter Parker, letting you fire off different types of webs and have a close encounter with the villainous Vulture.

Recommendation: Sadly, the Spider-Man experience isn’t really worth checking out even though it’s free. It’s short and uninspired.

Cavernous Wastes, from Pounching Kitten Games
Price: $9.99

This one’s probably going to slip under your radar, but if you like six degrees of freedom (6DOF) shooters then it may be worth checking out. Jump into a vehicle and explore maze-like caverns, fighting off enemies. Visually it’s not very impressive but its gameplay could be a winner for the right person.

Recommendation: Fans of the 6DOF shooters should check it out.

How Overwatch, Team Fortress, and League of Legends Inspired Ancient Amuletor For PSVR

How Overwatch, Team Fortress, and League of Legends Inspired Ancient Amuletor For PSVR

Ancient Amuletor is an ambitious upcoming tower-defense shooter that mixes elements of MOBAs and multiple other genres all into one package. It’s coming to PlayStation VR (PSVR) later this year and we had the chance to gain additional insight into the game’s development and inspiration from the game’s Lead Producer and TiGames CEO Zhang Tao.

Ever since the game was first announced we’ve been eager to dive into it and our hands-on preview from PAX East left us hungry for more.

UploadVR: There aren’t many games like this on PSVR, but I’m curious to know why you chose that platform over the Gear VR, or even Rift and Vive?

Zhang Tao: PSVR is one of the largest VR platforms, and its library of content only continues to grow stronger. While still in its first year, we think the quality of games on PSVR such as Resident Evil 7 and Farpoint are great, and they are really showing the potential for the VR experience on the system. Although we are a new game studio, we hope to bring players complete and mature VR games, so we chose to start our games on the PSVR. We plan to also bring our game to Steam VR and the Oculus Store but we wanted to reveal Ancient Amuletor on PSVR first.

UploadVR: Where did the idea for the game come from? It seems to be combining a lot of genres and styles into one game.

Zhang Tao: When we made our first prototype, our intention was to make a more traditional shooting game. We didn’t want to limit our players with only one projectile so we tried to implement archery into its gameplay and found it opened up so many more possibilities. Then we simply discarded the original design, and created a mage, puppeteer, ninja, and other different characters with different gameplay mechanics. Initially, we were surprised to find just how many different & interesting gameplay mechanics a VR headset and motion controller can bring compared to traditional console titles. In doing so, we sought to make a game that included small elements of our favorite hero-based games such as Team Fortress, Overwatch, and League of Legends, so we can give players a vast variety of play styles to choose from. After that we had to determine the rules of the game; we all know VR has no good solution to movement problems, so we chose the tower defense idea, because the “tower” is not mobile and the enemy will be the only moving element inside the game.

Now, we are constantly expanding our hero selections, so in the next few months we will introduce more heroes through DLC. We are also playing around with map designs and new game modes in later updates, which are not limited to just tower defense.

UploadVR: How did past game development projects influence work on Ancient Amuletor?

Zhang Tao: Before Ancient Amuletor, I made an action game for Xbox One Kinect. This experience allowed me to figure out how to adequately use physical movements in a fluid manner. Knowing which movements players will be most comfortable with is one of the trickiest parts of game development, especially with an action-based game where so much is happening at once. As a team, we have more than 10 years of experience with Unreal Engine, which allowed us to finish the game in a short amount time with the highest quality.

UploadVR: What were the most difficult parts of balancing a game like this for PSVR?

Zhang Tao: In the past multi-heroes games, the balance is mostly numerical, attack power, hit points, and resistance. But in VR, especially with the use of motion controller, there is a very interesting thing to balance: “stamina”. By this we mean the real physical strength of the players, not the character on the screen. We have done several physical tests for our players and it’s yielded some interesting results. For example, with the gunner players can play for more than one hour, but only 40 minutes for the archer, and for the puppeteer players have difficulty playing for 30 minutes. It’s all about finding a happy medium that works for everyone. So we will use player’s physical exertion to balance the game, playing more exhausting heroes will do more damage. This alone makes it much different than a normal tower defense game.

UploadVR: What did you find most challenging about making a game specifically for a VR headset?

Zhang Tao: We found the biggest challenge is combating the player’s past gaming experiences. Most players, after wearing the VR headset are placed in a new type of experience, but for the game controls, players still follow their previous intuitions. For example, players are still very dependent on interface design, such as HUD and UI, and these are not realistic looking things and do not translate well for VR. Another example is the story; traditional games usually use cinematic or various cut scenes to describe the game’s plot, which is no different from how viewers understand plot in movies. But in VR, narrative is very difficult and we lack the mediums to allow players to follow a world view to observe. All of these are obstacles for players experiencing VR, especially those that are new to the medium. We’ve gained a ton of experience in making Ancient Amuletor and now have the confidence to face these challenges and continue to find new ways to promote VR and continue to improve in the future.

Ancient Amuletor is slated to release for PSVR this summer with Rift and Vive likely to follow at a later date. Hopefully we find out more about the game at E3 2017 next month.

Tower Defence Title Ancient Amulator Gets Free PlayStation VR Demo

Inspired by the ancient civilisation of Egypt and the modern design of tower defence titles, Ancient Amulator will be coming soon to PlayStation VR. Ahead of the full release, the developers at Time of Virtual Reality (TVR) and TiGames have released a free demo for PlayStation VR users to test out.

The demo consists of a single-player trial that gives players a taste of the full game by allowing them to take control of either the Archer or Mage hero to either shoot arrows at the waves of foes that comes the player’s way, or blast them with powerful magic spells.

So far, out of the two playable characters in the demo, only the Archer’s background and name has been revealed. The Archer has been named as Lia Ilphukiir is an elf from a realm called Alfheim, fighting with the traditional elvish longbow.

Developed by TiGames for VR and built using Unreal Engine 4, Ancient Amulator is designed to be an intuitive tower defence game that is easy for new VR users to pick up and play. When the full title is released, there will be four hero archetypes to choose from, Gunner, Puppeteer, Archer and Mage, all of whom will have their own abilities and play styles. The player will be able to dynamically switch between hero characters if a change of tactics is required.

Ancient Amulator uses the PlayStation Move motion controllers for maximum immersion and intuitiveness. Users will be able to cut down hordes of magical creatures and monsters of the ancient world using a bow, gun or magical staff. Upon release, there will be two modes available, single-player or co-operative multiplayer for up to three people.

Ancient Amulator is due for release later on in summer 2017. Further information can be found on the official website. A video trailer is available to view below.

VRFocus will continue to report on new VR experiences.

Ancient Magic Rises on to PlayStation VR with Ancient Amuletor

The ancient world is a mystery in many ways. We know very little, when judged against the length of time the civilisation existed, about the ancient Egyptians and how they lived. Developer Time of Virtual Reality (TVR) has chosen to speculate on Egyptian society in upcoming co-op shooter Ancient Amuletor.

The title is set in a world strongly inspired by the style, art and mythology of ancient Egypt. The player can choose a hero character to play as, each of whom have different abilities and attributes to match differing play styles. The videogame can be played solo, or in co-operative mode with friends. The aim is to defend the magical crystals that maintain balance in the world of Ancient Amuletor.

ancient amuletor1

The developers have so far finalised four different hero types. Archer, Gunner, Mage and Puppeteer. It is possible to switch to a different hero even while in the middle of a fight if the player finds that a different skillset is required. Two heroes have been given names and backgrounds so far; Lia Ilphukiir is an elf from a realm called Alfheim, a ranger captain who fights with a bow and arrow, thus filling the Archer archetype. Katie Clarke is a human scientist and inventor who created her own custom guns. She can also use wild fire for area of effect damage and fits into the gunner niche.

Ancient Amuletor was created with Unreal Engine 4 and designed to have a simple and intuitive arcade style that is easy to pick up and play without extensive tutorials. The developers are hoping to make Ancient Amuletor available some time in summer 2017 for PlayStation VR.

A trailer for the title is available to view below. Further information can be found on the Ancient Amuletor official website.

VRFocus will bring you further news on Ancient Amuletor and other PlayStation VR titles when it becomes available.

Hands-On with Tower Defense Shooter Ancient Amuletor on PSVR

Hands-On with Tower Defense Shooter Ancient Amuletor on PSVR

When it comes to tower defense games Sony’s PlayStation VR (PSVR) has been surprisingly lacking. While developers have aimed to introduce players to the world of VR through other genres, there isn’t a whole lot to choose from if you’re looking to quench your thirst for some good, old fashioned tower defending. Thankfully, Ancient Amuletor from TiGames has stepped in with a surprisingly fun, co-op centric, and most importantly, VR-friendly take on the age-old genre.

When I got my hands on Ancient Amuletor at this year’s PAX East convention, I was surprised by what I found. While the game is still fairly bare bones in terms of presentation, the basic idea is similar to any tower defense game: set in an ancient world, you’ll be pit against various magical monsters and creatures as they try to take down your base. You’ll have your pick of multiple heroes, ranging from archers, mages, gunners, and even a weird puppeteer-like character as you travel from pillar to pillar trying to keep various crystals from being destroyed.

Defending Your Base

Each round of Ancient Amuletor plays like a standard tower defense game, only in a first person perspective. Once the game started, I was able to transport to various pillars located around the map with the tap of a button on the Move controller. In a genre that often has you able to see an entire map at once, it was surprisingly fun to  maneuver myself throughout the level in order to constantly check up on how an area is doing. Staying too long in one place meant that it was likely that another would be overrun, which added to the frenetic nature that those type of games already have.

Thankfully, I played the demo with another person, and it made for a better playing experience. There is no penalty for being on the same pillar as a buddy, and the game doesn’t restrict you to one of each hero as most others do, which is a pleasant change. We were able to take down the waves of enemies fairly easily, and after the last of them was defeated, the demo ended with a bang: a giant, towering (no pun intended) boss appeared above us. To defeat it,  we simply had to time our attacks right; the boss swings in to attack, which opens a window of time to attack it.

The developers of the game, the China-based TIGames, have likened Ancient Amuletor to a MOBA in terms of how it deals with hero-based gameplay. That’s not entirely far off from how the game plays, as the heroes all feel like they bring something different to the table when you pick one. In my brief time with the game (I got to play through two full rounds), I was able to play as every character for a fairly decent amount of time. Switching between them is fairly quick and can be done mid-game, allowing you to invoke different strategies as the situation calls for. All of the playable heroes offer unique and interesting ways to play, especially for a VR title.

Mixing it Up

Of the four characters, the gunslinger is by far the most traditional and works the best in the VR setting. With two guns, you simply move from pillar to pillar and mow down enemies. The archer, as one might assume, was probably the toughest to control, as I not only had to be careful in drawing the arrow back to make sure I got a powerful shot off, but I also had to be precise in aiming, as the game was not too forgiving if I missed shots. The games other two heroes – the mage and puppet master – might not be the most powerful heroes in the game, but they certainly are the most fun to use.

As a mage (and also a right-handed person), I was given a spell book in my left hand and a hook-shaped wand in my right. With a press of the trigger button on the left Move controller, an orb would appear above the pages of the book. Dragging the wand over it allowed me to pick up the spell and then flick it down onto enemies to deal a fair bit of damage. You can even “stack” spells, so to speak, by summoning multiple orbs and leaving them to hang while you travel about and find the best place to rain down chaos on your enemies. During my time with Ancient Amuletor, the mage was easily the most fun character to use simply due to how fun it was to summon and cast spells in VR.

The final class, the puppet master, was also a bit fun if not a bit gimmicky. As the puppet master, you can toss a puppet onto the ground that will mimic your movements. While it’s fun to move yourself about and watch a puppet mimic you as you fight through hordes of enemies, it’s not a truly effective hero and didn’t offer much defense when it came to actually completing a round.

Ancient Amuletor may not be the most ground breaking PSVR game to debut on the system, but it’s certainly filling a hole that not many other companies have tried to do. By delivering a fun, easy to pick up and play twist on the tower defense genre for the PSVR, Ancient Amuletor looks ready to burst out onto the scene and capture a large slice of a market that’s ripe for the taking when it releases sometime this summer.

Despite only playing a couple of rounds during my demo, I could easily see myself picking this up and getting lost in it for some time, which is exactly what the PSVR needs now more than ever. If you’re a fan of tower defense games, make sure this one is on your radar.
