There’s less than a week to go until Skydance Interactive and AMC launch The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners across multiple virtual reality (VR) platforms. VRFocus recently demoed the videogame with initial impressions being good. But why take our word for it when you can check out the gameplay footage, kicking some zombie ass (and getting killed several times in the process).
If you’ve been following VRFocus’ coverage of The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners you’ll be aware that the title is an official collaboration with AMC, bringing the popular TV show into VR for the first time. While set in the same universe with little nods to the main franchise, the videogame will have its own original storyline to set it apart, taking place in New Orleans.
Several locations are revealed in the video, from a very creepy graveyard early on, to a suburban street setting and then further into the city at a school. As with any zombie experience The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners is all about survival, utilising the tools at hand to defend yourself from ravenous walkers. This gameplay video is all about action, showcasing several ranged and melee weapons and how best to use them.
For instance, while a well-placed bullet to the head offers a clean kill the noise it makes attracts more enemies. While a knife offers a silent kill but that does mean getting in close. And when you’re toe to toe with a walker things can get a little messy. Walkers can grab you and you can grab them. Shake them off by waving those arms or grab a neck and plunge that blade into their skull.
What isn’t shown in the video are features like crafting, where all the items collected in each level can be used to build awesome weapons. All weapons have a durability factor and ones found are more prone to breaking than those crafted. Another important factor in The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners is its narrative and the fact that your actions do alter the storyline. Players are given choices whereby whatever decision they make they’ll have to live with the consequence. It’s not just about killing walkers, you have humans to deal with to, some friendly, some not so.
Take a look at the gameplay video below for more details. The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners will arrive on Steam for Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Valve Index and Windows Mixed Reality headsets on 23rd January. For further updates keep reading VRFocus.
