VR Scientific Festival Reveals VR Cinema Program

2018 will be the second year that the VR Sci Fest, also known as the VR Scientific Festival, has been run in Stockholm, Sweden. The festival focusses on immersive media such as virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR) and how it can be used to help the scientific community. The organisers of this year’s event have just revealed the lineup for its VR Cinema program.

The organisers have announced that the main subject of the event for 2018 will be ‘Virtual City’ and accordingly, the VR Cinema programme will present a various films dedicated to this idea.

The films shown during the VR Cinema will include internationally recognised brands and well as small, independent creators. All of those featured will have their work shown in a synchronised way on 25 Samsung Gear VR headsets.

Over 30 films will be featured as part of the program, curated by programming director of the festival Georgy Molodtsov. Among the films featured will be Waymo 360° Experience: A Fully Self-Driving Journey, created by Google and Waymo; 2030: Smart City Life 360 created by Philips Lighting and Take A Ride on Elon Musk’s Hyperloop by Next Animation Studios.

“Last festival showed us that we chose the right combination – science, creativity and VR. During the year between the festivals we’ve been invited to organize scientific VR showcases at more than 40 events, including NEXT – Marche Du Film at Cannes Film Festival, IN/SCIENCE Festival, VR @ MIT, Stockholm Film Festival, Academia Film Olomouc and many others. The festival is a non-profit educational event free and open to the general public. We are trying to make it an anchor event for the all the activities we do throughout a year,” Elena Malakhatka, festival founder and director emphasises, “It’s really great to see that the works selected last year become more and more popular with the worldwide audience, for example, ‘The Blank Canvas – Hacking Nature‘ which premiered at our festival and later on was selected to HTC ‘VR for Impact’ initiative and was showcased at World Economic Forum in Davos.”
