Arriving on the crowd funding website Kickstarter earlier this month is a puzzle game inspired by Myst called Subject 246.
Developer Virtual Guys is seeking to raise €2,500 EUR by November, Subject 246 has been built specifically for virtual reality (VR), supporting head-mounted displays (HMDs) Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. Mixing puzzle and exploration elements the title finds players waking up in a strange room with no clue how they got there, with creepy noises your only company. To escape these mysterious confines players must search every room they come across for clues, not only to uncover the story and the characters past but their ticket home.
Originally Virtual Guys looked to create a short immersive VR experience, but as development has progressed so have the ideas and gameplay length. Currently the title stands at around an hour long but current plans and ideas could see the videogame fleshed out to approximately five hours if the Kickstarter is successful.
There are plenty of backer tiers available from €1 up to €1,000. To get the full Steam release you’ll need to pledge €8 or more, which will also see your name in the credits and you get some high res wall papers. If you like some paraphernalia with your backer rewards the €50 tier includes a mug and the €75 tier includes a T-Shirt along with the soundtrack a Steam key.
At its core Subject 246 has been made with HTC Vive’s room scale in mind, allowing players to search in, around and under objects such as furniture. For Oculus Rift the team plan to make the videogame Oculus Touch compatible ensuring the full immersive experience.
Hitting the goal will allow the team to improve the graphical fidelity of Subject 246 by purchasing assets on the Unreal Engine marketplace, as they don’t currently have an artist working on the project. If the campaign hits €3,000 + then another member will be added to work on the artistic side.
VRFocus will continue its coverage of Subject 246, reporting back with any new updates.
