Two weeks can be a very short time in the virtual reality (VR) industry. These past two have featured the launch of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s (SIE) PlayStation VR, the Oculus Connect 3 (OC3) conference with all of the Touch announcements, and Google official unveiling its mobile head-mounted display (HMD), Daydream View to the world. The later didn’t feature many videogames at the event but the website showcased 30 titles coming to Daydream View, one of which was Aspyr’s Layers of Fear: Solitude. The developer recently revealed its using Epic Games’ Unreal Engine and why.
On the Unreal Engine Blog, Game Director Bartosz Kaproń of Krakow, Poland-based developer Bloober Team said: “To bring Layers of Fear to Daydream we had to change the engine from Unity to Unreal Engine 4 in order to hit performance and fidelity targets for the platform.
“Both the stability of Unreal Engine 4 and having access to the engine’s source code made this version not only possible to create, but we could also retain both the stunning visuals and the dark atmosphere people loved in Layers of Fear.
“Accessing Unreal Engine’s root also made it possible for us to create our own tools to aid in the production and to shape the game into one-of-a-kind VR masterpiece of fear for fans of the horror genre around the world. We can’t wait for fans to experience Layers of Fear: Solitude on Daydream.”
Layers of Fear: Solitude is the VR version of Layers of Fear, a first-person psychedelic horror that launched on Steam in July. Players take on the role of a disturbed painter trying to complete his magnum opus while battling ghastly visions and a crumbling psyche.
