Oculus CAD Elements Going Open Source So Anyone Can Build Rift Accessories

For those that look at the Oculus Rift and want to tinker around with the design Oculus is now giving everyone the means to do so. At today’s keynote address during the Oculus Connect 3 event in San Jose, California, Oculus’ CEO and co-founder Brendan Iribe announced that the CAD design for the facial interface and the audio connector would now be available.

It was just after Iribe revealed the new Oculus Earphones that he mentioned – almost on a side note – that Oculus would be making these CAD designs available for anyone to develop their own Rift accessories.

For most this news isn’t that important, not many people are going to suddenly go out and start building facial interfaces for themselves. But this news does open up the possibilities for other third-party manufacturers to begin designing and building lots of possible accessories.

Companies could offer a customised facial interface for example, accurately contouring to their head for a perfect fit, or giving a wider array of options for those that wear glasses for example. For the audio connector, headphone manufacturers could begin using their own technology to produce an even more immersive experience, with a range of headphones or earphones that a specifically suited to the Oculus Rift headset.

Keep an eye out over the next year as you may start seeing a lot more alternative accessories for the device. For all the latest VR news from Oculus Connect 3, keep reading VRFocus.
