Today Google is holding its long awaited ‘Made By Google’ event in San Francisco, California, with lots of new information and surprises being revealed. One of the headline announcements expected was for the Daydream head-mounted display (HMD) which was first unveiled in May at the Google I/O conference. That time has now come with the tech giant showcasing the hardware in its final form.
Taking to the stage to make the announcement today was Clay Bavor, Vice President of Virtual Reality at Google who’s revealed Daydream View, a headset that comes with a fabric surround. Bavor said: “It’s the first Daydream ready VR ready headset. Now if you’re into VR i’ll say that the specs are there, it has a nice filed of view and with the Daydream phone, low latency, and really accurate head tracking. But we didn’t just look at the specs, we obsessed over the details of the design, we wanted to make something comfortable and really easy to use.”
Further details on Daydream’s software are expected shortly. The Google I/O conference unveiled several studios work on compatible experiences including CCP Games with Gunjack NEXT and Resolutions Games with Wonderglade. We’re still waiting for the actual price and launch date to be announced, but earlier today VRFocus did report on a rumoured price of $79 USD, which would put Daydream under the regular price of its closest rival and current market leading mobile HMD, Gear VR, made by Samsung in cooperation with Oculus.
As further details are released on Daydream, VRFocus will bring you the latest updates.
